Can demons magically give you levels that allow you to fuse better demons? This "SMT requires no grinding" meme needs to die. In order to get stronger demons, you have to fuse them and recruit fusion fodder, right?
Higher level demons require higher levels to control. So if, say, you need a demon that heals more efficiently, or is null to Mudo skills, you may need to level grind to be able to summon or fuse said demon.
I got to Mem Aleph at level 72 with a bunch of demons with no Curse resistance, she wrecked my party. I am currently level grinding to fuse demons that are not ass.
SJ is by far the most grindy SMT game I have ever played. Even in Nocturne I think the only times I ever grinded were for two of the Fiend fights and for Lucifer.

Or you should fuse better demons using the fodder you have. More fodder means more available fusions, which consequently leads to a wider breadth of skill inheritance options available to you. Being under-leveled is nowhere near the game-breaker you're making it out to be. In fact, I find it fucking hard to imagine how you managed to end up under-leveled in an SMT game in the first place. Talk to more demons, level up lower-level demons for their Sources as you go along, use them where you need them. It really isn't hard.

Technically, you don't have to grind hardly at all in SMT to play through things. In practice though, you're not going to know what demons to fuse and how without a lot of experimenting your first time or using google. To experiment and find the demons you'll need, you're going to have to recruit demons to fuse, which takes time persuading them in battle. You can instead use macca (The game's money) to summon demons you've already recruited and fuse them that way, however. On top of all this, you'll need levels on the main character to fuse higher level demons, which in at least SJ, you can easily get by soloing encounters since you gain quadruple XP like that.
So the answer is, if you're an expert of what demons have what in a game, you can get by without grinding at all, if you're not, be prepared to look up what you need on gamefaqs or grind xp and macca to summon what demons you need.
