Lightsabers being weightless depends almost entirely which trilogy we're talking about though, it's not some canon rule. OT they seemed much more cumbersome, prequels they became light as a feather (which ties in to the 'deadly to the untrained user' thing). But JJ explicitly stated he wanted the lightsabers to feel like they had more weight to them similar to the OT, so there's no real reason anyone would cut themselves just from attempting basic attacks. I don't know why they didn't just shoot her in the face after she disabled the shields.
They literally had no reason to kill her if she disobeyed, but she obeyed. They should have shut down the shields and then killed Phasma since she only served to serve the First Order after her disabling of the shields.

The star wars tech book Disney put out. It explains the Kylo Ren's lightsaber is a design he found from and ancient Sith/Jedi world that was mentioned in the EU a couple of times. It uses an artificial crystal he made that has cracks in it, which causes the excess energy beams and the wavy effect.
It has been mentioned in multiple sources that artificial crystals that aren't allowed to mature properly, or natural crystals that have even minute flaws in them, can cause the beam to become weird or short out completely. A character once lost her arm because a flaw in her crystal caused the lightsaber's beam to go back into the hilt when she was trying to block another Jedi trainee's attack, the Jedi cut her arm off and her lightsaber blew up preventing them from reattaching her arm.

How does the rotational velocodensity of the blade not just immediately slice the guy in two if the guy moves his arm? He had to pull it out. They used them to slowly cut through blast doors in the prequels, and a meatbag requires pulling the blade out.

The movie wasn't bad, it was just really, really unpolished. The premise was sound, the ideas behind the film were really well designed, and most of the characters besides Rey were amazingly represented.
It is the small details that screw things up and make the movie just an 'okay' film. If they had a scene with Fin and bloody-handed trooper right before they landed, something to establish a bond before the fight, it would have made sense that the trooper's death would have effected Fin that way.
If they had Phasma be the one to take down Fin with the shock tonfa, proving that she was badass and setting character tension between the two, it would have been much better.
If they had attempted to have Rey have to learn ANYTHING, or even failing to do something, it would have been much better.
It was a well thought out, but unpolished film that made many shortcuts and narrative leaps to get from point A to Z, skipping over the entire MNOP section of the alphabet.
