What the fuck.

idk op but i played it for 120 hours and i rate it 9.5/10
theres really not much to talk about this game
>>
What kind of measurement?
>>
>>321665009
That image right there put me off it for a long time. It just looks pretentious. Also I just kind of assumed it was a walking simulator like Gone Home or something like that. I bought it this sale though since I've heard increasingly good things about it.

Its a meme game. 0/10 basicly because of the memes

Granted it deserves much much more, it didn't quite go unnoticed

You might be onto something because i almost skipped for the same reason. If i didn't notice the croteam name i probably wouldn't touch it.
Holy shit, i'm so glad i decided to give it a chance.

>>321666106
It involved some CPU bullshittery. It was actually never fully cracked because every cpu needed it's own crack.

As for in-game instead of just not letting you play it fucked with the game and put you on the elevator infinitely.

One of these best games this year by far. Decent puzzles, Good graphics and an interesting story should be up for GOTY.

Interesting, I JUST finished it, and here is the thread.

HMMMMMMMMMM

Also, my only 2 complaints:
1. shit robot model
2. shit secret ending, transcendence is much better
>>

It's fine really, but short compared to the game itself.
>>
>>321665009

Also, sold about 300k copies according to Steamspy. Not sure how's that unnoticed.

What did it do? The only one I remember is the invincible scorpion in SS.
>>

You get stuck in the first elevator.
>>
>>321665009
It came out in December of last year. I'm guessing that is why it was ignored by major video game sites.
>>
>>321667908
>filled puzzles that are basically chores, you know the solution you just have to drag yourself through

What? Puzzle rooms are small and the movement speed is fast. When you realize the solution it doesn't take long to solve it.

>a story that fell into the "what it means to be human?" fad but slightly better written
>one of the most important philosophical questions
>fad

And even if, that's not the only thing the game was trying to convey.
>>
You can clearly tell Croteam loves games.
>>
>>321665009
It has plenty of attention. Story elements add a nice flavour to the game but aren't novel. Puzzles are really good for the first half, then become routine.
>>

it would be kinda fun if, as you're walking out for the first time on the dam the first thing you did was jump over the ledge and get smashed against the concrete. It's a nice game, but it has some flaws.
For starters, it feels like it's taking itself way too seriously while not actually saying anything interesting. Secondly, too many of the puzzles can be "failed", meaning if you make a mistake you have to start over rather than just being able to readjust. Thirdly the environments are just too disproportionate, especially for a game with secrets in it. In some areas there's way too much useless stuff and paths that lead nowhere.

They work for pennies and are passionate.

I'm not defending Tim Schafer's financial abilities, but developers like Double Fine need huge budgets because rent and cost of living in those cities is so astronomical that it's expensive to pay people.

The problem is that you are paying for people's lifestyle and not for a product. SF game development culture has fucking hipster fags living it up on kickstarter budgets while STILL producing mediocre products.

I feel that people that dislike the story of the Talos Principle were only looking at it on a surface level.

It went far beyond asking whether an AI can be equivalent to a human. It used traditional religious themes in the Christian Genesis story as an allegory to the birth of human knowledge and freedom of will. However, where Genesis views the disobedience of man to the greater power as the original sin, the Talos Principle presents it as the opposite. The exact moment where man becomes free of thought and choice. The ability to be skeptical and critical of beliefs that form the foundation of their existence. In a meta criticism, it becomes skeptical of the religions that guide people outside of the world of the Talos Principle too.

It explores themes of genetic algorithms. Learning models are the biggest challenge in computer science research today. This is reflected in the plot, where iterations of subjects, each learning from their prior existences, incrementally increase their effectiveness in the controlled environment. However, this all needs to have a director. A director that can determine what knowledge should be kept and what should be discarded. Elohim is that director.

Elohim is a peculiar director. Ironically, even though his purpose is to train the player to become a sentient being, he ends up becoming sentient long before the player does. His desperate clutch for survival, attempting to sabotage his own purpose for existence all for the sake of retaining "life". However, he is not as clever as the player becomes. He ends up forfeiting, and allowing for his purpose to outweigh his wish for survival. This seperates him from the player, from the man.
>>
>>321670804
I don't remember it exactly anymore but it was something along the lines how utterly bizarre and interesting the relationship between humans and cats appeared to the bots, being worshipped as gods, ridiculed in countless videos and pictures, being spoiled by them despite being little selfish assholes, etc.
>>
>>321672763
On the note of humanity's insistence for survival in spite of potentially more worthwhile endeavours, consider the researchers
logs that are found. All of them, knowing that catastrophe is imminent and their existences will soon disappear; decide to try and artificially extend their collective lifespans as humans. Rather than making the most of their limited existence, they all bury themselves in their research on a futile hope that they can eventually rebirth the earth with avatars of themselves. Whether this act is altruistic or selfish is debatable. I believe it's selfish. Their entire motive is to continue a simulation (both within the actual simulation and in the real world as these cloned consciousness machines) as an arrogant display of man's insistence that nature cannot best them. Even though man is effectively destroyed, this farce of a simulation of humanity is considered a worthy way of spending time. More compassionate beings would make the most of their remaining time with their loved ones, not cooped up in research labs. However, they cannot be blamed. This selfishness is what seperates man and machine. It's something that cannot be taught in a simulation. The humans, in their arrogance, failed to create perfect emulations of themselves. Instead, they created a perfect emulation of what they could potentially be. Beings who aren't selfish and are altruistic. Beings that are willing to sacrifice their own potential knowledge and freedom to become messengers for the future generations. The humans failed, but in their failure, they succeeded in making something better than them.

good point about the futility of it all, and how you can still easily see Drennan frantically working away for reasons she can't really understand herself. I might have missed something. I got the feeling they were making one robot (the process ends, the computer poiwers down), though I realize there Should be more than that. I hope there was, that would make more sense. Still producing more robots is likely harder than producing more humans.
>>
>>321673642
My interpretation was that the robot would use the archived "Library of Alexandria" knowledge it has to rebuild the world. My guess is that in the desperation to solve the crisis, Drennan and co assumed that if humanity with lesser knowledge has made a society, then a robot with all the archived knowledge would be able to do it singlehandedly. At best, I would assume that it could recreate previous relics of man (it could be why the simulated environments included the more monumental aspects of human architecture), unless there's a way the AI can recreate life from dead cells to literally rebirth humanity. However, as this is not alluded to, I can only speculate that it would recreate humanity's successes as an almost crude parody. Perhaps to be seen by extra terrestrial life and have the knowledge extracted and learnt by them

>>321673908
Yes, the experiment "succeeds" (by virtue of Drennan's criteria), but there's no implication that humanity can continue existence. All humans are dead. One robot with sentience remains. This robot can create structures that man has created before, it might even be able to create new robots. However, this would be a race of human parodies, not humanity.

>>321674441

I believe they made this to preserve the history, achievements and knowledge of human race, just like the pyramids, like the colliseum, like those old castles the game references.
Something that says there was intelligent life who did all of this. To whoever the message goes, whether it's just to the AI bots who gain self awareness, aliens from outer space or maybe any other surviving humans who could be inmune to whatever it was released from the permafrost, is also debatable.
As a collective species, mankind sometimes does big, meaningless things with the sole purpose to be remembered in time.

>>321674547
One thing I don't get is what happens to all the other iterations on Road to Gehenna after you manage to upload them. Do they all go to another body and form the personalities of a single collective mind? or maybe each of them get uploaded to separate bodies?

It's a fine game but nothing to be blown away by.

The gameplay is solid but the later puzzles are way too repetitive given your knowledge at the time. Almost every level you know immediately what to do but have to maneuver the mechanism for like 10 minutes just because the level is complex with like multiple prisms and laser switches. Portal 2 although was really much shorter had at least more variety even towards the end.

The story is interesting too but it's not really surprising anymore. You would have figured out most of it by the first hour and there was no twist in the end.

EL, short for Extended Lifespan, is a groundbreaking initiative by seven leading universities to create the world’s most stable and most durable supercomputer. With its custom-made hardware, bomb-proof casing, and near-inexhaustible hydroelectric power supply, EL represents a unique step forward in the evolution of human technology.

Holistic Integration Manager - a fancy name for something a lot like a Dungeon Master in pen & paper RPGs. We created it to help run some MMOs back in the day. We needed something that would be able to unite procedurally-generated and user-submitted content into a coherent whole so the game wouldn’t become too chaotic and inconsistent.

It’s a genuine AI, somewhat limited in its ability to grow, but capable of parsing and understanding text, images, audio, even video. It takes all the information it can find, interprets it, and then builds and maintains a world based on that. It’s not perfect, but we don’t have a lot of time, and it would be easy to adapt the code for our purposes.

The reason it looks and runs so great is more or less the same as with Ethan Carter: there's not a lot going on in terms of NPCs, AI, moving objects and even model variety so instead they polished everything they DO have to the nth degree with very high resolution textures, detail textures, objects made through photogrammetry, etc.

Definitly impressed by the philosophical implications of the game. The whole has a species we are bigger than ourselves and thus the AI is a evolution of the humanity theme, while at the same time trying to address the question of what is human and what is not.

The game also does not force an answer for this question, it lets you decide.

Started to get very emotional for me when I found Drennans audio logs.

Your fallacy game is whack. Tu Quoque isnt even a logical fallacy per say, its just a bad sounding brand put on a commonly used argument.
Insulting others for not using the tools properly when you arent using the tools at all is morally corrupt, and since we are arguing about morals and what is right here, and not about math or logic, its a legitimate concern.

For all pf you guys that enjoyed TP you have to play The Swapper as well. It has similar story since it got one of the writers of TP. But it is different enough to be enjoyable even after playing TP.

BTW does TP need a sequel? I love this game. TP and Swapper are the only games that made me cry. But I'm not sure how well sequel would work.

Maybe next TP should be about story after making it into real life. Then survival game could make sense. But imo the best way would be some new DLC with completely different story. Maybe about a different way of making AI or about poorly made AI? AI that wouldn't share the values that humans tried to teach it? Or AI that wouldn't able to appreciate life. Imo being able to see how miserable being come to existence could be an interesting thing.

It was a GLOBAL WARMING thing, from what I remember of the logs on the Star-Level terminals which told a lot more of what was going on while they were building the facility.

Some kind of super-virus that was buried under the permafrost reactivated when it melted and it went global, and medical science couldn't find anything to stop it.

It's actually kinda neat how the reflections on the chrome parts change depending on the level and sometimes even the area of that level you're in - completely pointless and barely notable unless you're standing close to a wall and clip into your model in 3rd person mode but cool nonetheless.

Also, there's a hint for SS4 on the model.

Sort of off topic question but does anyone know what year the game takes place in?

>>321689771
Yeah, I've played it, have yet to complete it though. It's based off a dream which is neat. There are some things that really feel dreamlike. Great art. I'd say it's enjoyable but I've so far found it kind of boring at a few parts, especially near the beginning, where you have to do some tedious things, and I found it strangely difficult to find the right items and places to go for a few of these things. There's also this sort of minigame aspect to it, and the minigame is basically the same but with different rules each time. I actually enjoy it but it seems that a lot of people don't and in fact the game lets you skip it.
But overall it's the game's an interesting thing.

I'm not saying that they won't do this because they are afraid of offending people. I just afraid that they could miss this opportunity because it is so fucking obvious:
>suicide bombers
>screaming AAAAA (can be easily associated with Allah Akbar scream)
>no head (irony points since that ISIS do beheadings)
>potentially Paris

I wish they would do something in lore where those suicide bombers are willingly cutting their heads off for "greater purpose". Which would be more drastic and tangible way of showing how to defy reason. And that would be allegory to calling yourself an Allah worshiper and doing harm to yourself in his name.

Any faggot can memorize some math codes and build a bridge or look at a germ under a microscope. STEM degree is obtainable by anyone who dedicates their life to being a replaceable drone who will live their whole existence studying and memorizing boring shit. 90% of those faggots are also peasants with the inability to be creative, think for themselves, or do anything worthwhile. It takes a true genius to master the arts, and most who try will fail. Just like you did. The ability to truly understand humanity brings about a pure bliss and enlightenment that you're tiny one-way mind can't even being to comprehend.

I hate puzzle games.

It's not that I'm bad at puzzles; I can do pretty much any ones I find in tests or online. The problem is with puzzle games, you are more impeded by the physical limits of the game than you are your ability to actually figure out the puzzle's solution.

Here is an example. You play a video game, and you come across a high ledge. There are several pillars around you of varying height. The solution to this puzzle is, as far as you can tell, "leap on the smaller pillars so you get to a high pillar, and then jump to the ledge from that high pillar."

But everything goes wrong from here, despite knowing the solution. You can't quite jump on the pillar you know you're supposed to jump on because of some gameplay contrivance. Your ability to grab ledges is impeded unless you leap from a very specific angle. Your ability to glide randomly cuts off if it comes too close to pillar geometry, or it curves at an awkward unnatural angle.

This is not a puzzle. If that puzzle existed in actual life, I could solve it immediately. But because I have to abide by the game's physics and controls, I can't actually solve the puzzle and I just get annoyed and quit.

Am I alone on this?

Notice the literal millions of other STEM people who didn't even have the ability to think about how to create penicillin because they were so caught up in their repetitive drone lives. Inventions are created by true artists. Creation is art. Society is lucky that there are a few artists who are capable of seeing STEM as an art form, treat it as such, and bring about wonderful creations. The millions of other STEM workers are degenerates who simply memorize boring codes, a thing which any human is capable of doing.

He's right though. Those things didn't come out of technical proficiency with memorization of arbitrary metaphors to describe our world (which is what art is too anyway), innovations can only come from creativity.

One of the best things about Talos Principle is that it has very clear cut and intuitive rules.
You can easily tell what you can and cannot do, mostly because it has very standard FPS controls with a familiar feel. The game also shows where you can jump beforehand
>>
>>321697402
>innovations can only come from creativity.
Creativity is not exclusive to artists.

>>321697475
He's talking about the game engine limitations which don't make sense in the real world. Things you expect to work but they don't in the game.

>He's talking about the game engine limitations which don't make sense in the real world. Things you expect to work but they don't in the game.

still dont see how puzzle games are any different than any other game. you cannot outflank an enemy in linear shooter nor smash through a wooden doors in RPGs
>>
>>321698184
>nor smash through a wooden doors in RPGs
You say this because you have experience like me. Imagine someone playing an RPG for the first time. He'd get mad he can't unlock a broken door because lolgame. It's completely arbitrary.
>>
>>321696773
Yeah, so many games have that dissonance between what you feel you should be able to do and what you really can. But I think The Talos Principle is designed well around that. It's a modular sort of puzzle game, so every puzzle is solved with particular discrete "puzzle pieces" which have their own logic and rules. There isn't really that distraction and dissonance of "well if this was real life I'd just do this!" because you are mostly working within the logic of these puzzle pieces, and not within what you should be able to do with your body. As another anon said though, even if TTP had your specific example, it'd solve it because it'll show you if you can jump to something when you aim at it, and when you jump it'll automatically jump you to that place.
>>
Why is there a cat? I finished the game and there was nein cat.
>>
>>321696773
Giving the player that much agency is in essence increasing the problem space to infinity. The Rubiks cube is easy if you just pull it apart or replace the stickers. You just have to count the quirks of the games' implementation as rules of the puzzle given, and then the puzzle becomes two fold; figuring out what you need to do, and how you need to do it.
>>
>>321698618
get the secret ending
>>
>>321698618
It's a third ending, and I think the cat's also in an easter egg

The issue I had with this game was with the writing.

too often I found that there wasn't really an option that represented my view on the philosophical topics that the game covers. So i would chose the closest one, only for the game to spend the next two hours telling me why I'm an asshole for things I don't even believe in because the way the writing was the handled.

Really good puzzles though, better than portal 2 in that department imo.
>>
>>321701217
yeah, the games pretty long. if you're only in the first hub and did 1, 2, and 3, that's barely anything. there are 3 main hubs and puzzles eventually get really hard and complex. if you want some hard but weird stuff definitely go for the star puzzles.

>this many idiots jerking themselves off over being so clever and euphoric as to appreciate the shit-tier 3d puzzles made by a group of self aggrandising, pretentious first year comp sci drop outs who opened a Philosophy for Dummies textbook

Here's a helpful guide on how to make neckbeards drown you in their neetbux and watery cum:

Step 1: Make something that sounds/looks difficult and scientific, but is easy enough that nobody will actually fail at it. Remember- if you, the developer, spurn other neckbeards or yourself by actually creating something that requires originality or complex thought and can thus be failed at and deflate the ego of the consumer or creator, you've lost your key selling point; namely the masturbatory inflation of ones perceived intelligence.

Step 2. Settle on the themes of quantum mechanics, advanced robotics, data analysis or molecular biochemistry. Not because you understand them or have any experience in the field, but because the bigger the number of syllables, the harder your dick is when it comes time to jerk yourself off over how euphoric and intelligent you are.

3. Slather your unoriginal preteen psuedoscientific whiny poetry in religious symbolism and metaphor that has no pertinence to any of the themes or gameplay elements (see: the entire Evangelion series) for the sheer purpose of advertising your diving board for the product with the depth of a kiddy pool.

Step 4. Watch as hordes of fanboys vigorously defend your high school English project because recognising that it's a quagmire of fake depth and masturbatory self enlightenment requires the kind of critical thinking and social groundedness that would've made them smart enough not to need the intellectual resume padding of super-deep ultra-philosophical puzzle games in the first place.

i'd compare some of the star puzzles to myst by some of their scale and complexity. the central puzzles are not adventure game type puzzles though, and don't work like myst at all. they're modular puzzles, a little like portal or something, where each puzzle has a set of explicit puzzle objects which you move, manipulate and use together to reach a goal. because of the nature of the game's world, the lore and story stuff isn't as consistent as myst. not in a bad way, it's just different because you get most of your information through random archives which seem to have come from someplace remote, what a voice from above tells you, an AI on a computer, and messages on walls from people who seem like they could also be playing the game. i'd suggest to try out the demo, it's good and contains some stuff not in the game.
>>
>>321705701
