What JRPG had the best combat system?
Pic not necessarily related.
Grandia
>all those replies
Guess I'll go play Grandia, then. Hopefully the game explains why the main girl has a boy name.
FFXIII
Come at me.

Shadow Hearts
Vagrant Story
FF Tactics
Secret of Mana
Lufia
Shining Force
Enjoy, m80
>>321653860
I'm partial to SMT, at least the newer ones.
Press turn is old-school turn based with added nuances with the extra turns.
Great system.
FFX
COME GET SOME

Mana Khemia
>>321655671
FF Tactics is really good, but it can get too easy.
Final Fantasy X
>>321656069
Which is why I mentioned Shining Force!
SMT/Persona bar none with Dragon Quest a close second, as Megaten has a fast forward button for battles.
I used to like SRPGs (with the exception of Fire Emblem) but it seems they all border on long as hell with how long turns take. It's not that I have ADD but when I'm playing a very long and probably padded game, I don't want battles to be needlessly long. I'll tolerate action RPGs as you're actually playing them, but when it comes to turn-based RPGs then I'm gonna turn off animations and put speed to max if I can.

This. Also Addictive as fuark
X-2
>>321653860
FFVII plays terrible. I missed so many phoenix down because I couldnt put the cursor in the right character because of the camera angle.
SMT Nocturne
Bravely Default.
>>321653860
Valkyria Chronicles.
>Ctrl + F

That's literally the only turn-based JRPG series with good combat.

Lightning Returns.

You have good taste, anon. Engaging and turn based all at once.
>>321657152
Shut up and Jam! Gaiden also has engaging and turn based combat as well.
Vagrant Story or Parasite Eve

FF 12
good mix of real time and turn based with strategic position

Martio and Weegee games use shitty gimmicks that allow 6 year olds to cheese their way through the boss fights and requires no skill whatsoever.
>>321654023
beat me to it.
Played Grandia II as a kid but got stuck at the Eye of Valmar because I was a baddie. Finished it recently on steam and now I want Grandia I & III badly.
Best combat system in any JRPGs I've played, even if it gets really easy toward the endgame.
>>321657394
>Martio and Weegee games use shitty gimmicks
What the fuck are you talking about?
>that allow 6 year olds to cheese their way through the boss fights and requires no skill whatsoever.
Not sure what you mean by "cheesing" boss fights. Do you mean Bro Attacks or something? And even then, it still requires infinitely more skill than your standard "attack, heal, attack, heal" JRPG fare.
>>321657639
>infinitely more skill than your standard "attack, heal, attack, heal" JRPG fare
Not really. Do you know what Martio and Weegee games are like? It's just "attack, attack, attack, attack, ..."
Stop defending shitty kid games.
Breath of Fire 4
Grandia was quite dope
I liked tales of symphonia's the best. Assuming all tales games have same combat.
t. sometimes plays jrpg
>>321653860
Tales of.
Turn based combat gets boring when you can actually plan and smack things at your leisure.
>>321656710
>undertale
>jrpg
>>321657982
>Not really. Do you know what Martio and Weegee games are like? It's just "attack, attack, attack, attack, ..."
You also have to time attacks, dodge attacks, make sure your bro's health doesn't get too low which is a bit easier said than done, learn to master bro attacks successfully, and understand the enemy/boss's pattern. The genius of the combat system is that it's so simple yet engaging.
>Stop defending shitty kid games.
>Calls someone kids
>Plays video games
LMAO
I think Star Oucen --> Tales
also played Grandia 2 and it was amazing
Shadow Hearts. Loved the Judgment Ring system.
>>321658552
still a kids game
gotta be over 18 to post here sorry m8
Shadow Hearts. 2 In particular. The only JRPG where i found myself hoping to get into random encounters because the combat was so much fun.
fight me, /v/

Turn based:
Early FF 1-6 and SMRPG (The ones beyond get to weird and open ended)
SMT Press-turn
Mario and Luigi/Paper Mario
Ar Tonelico
Pokemon
Golden Sun
Earthbound/Mother 3
Sands of Destruction
Radiant Historia
Eternal Sonata
Action:
Tales of
Star ocean (only 2)
Chrono trigger
TWEWY

>>321653860
Anything that doesn't have rng-encounters is on the right track. Had enough of that shit for a lifetime.
Most recent JRPG I played was Trails in the Sky, and I thought it had a pretty good system. Being able to initiate combat on your terms is a lot more enjoyable. The balance in the combat itself was a little off though.
But my favorite is probably Tactics Ogre, or maybe Grandia II.
>>321653860
Dark Souls.
I'm not kidding, I never even best one the souls games but the combat was brilliant.
JRPGs are generally shit but Parasite Eve and Xenogears had fun combat.
>>321658646
Star Ocean is literally a poor mans Tales of, It's developed by an offshoot of the people who worked on Tales of Phantasia/Destiny, Even Sakuraba is the composer. But they broke off of Namco and went and made Tri-ace
Star Ocean is a carbon copy of Phantasia down to the exact sound effects, assets, and menus, its all borrowed. And its combat is limited
Star Ocean 2 is a bit better, good enough to be stand alone sure, but its combat is still behind games it ran against being Eternia, Rebirth and Destiny 2
Star ocean 3 is downright horrible in both plot and battle, tedious grinding, unfufilling rewards, combat gets dull as hell because you get no new moves other then ICE BLADE every few attacks Blue sphere was fucking stupid
SO4 isnt even worth talking about.
SO5 may be the first actually competent SO game and even then it looks like tis ripping shit tons off of modern tales games just to stay afloat.
>>321653860
FF V
>>321659218
>I never even best one the souls games but the combat was brilliant.
FFX
The simple ability to plan your turns in advance adds a nice layer of strategy.
Granted, you eventually reach the point where you spam the same shit every turn anyway, but that's RPGs for you.
Well I just finished Golden Sun and I thought it was great, but another anon told me it's not that good a JRPG yesterday, and he was probably right seeing as it was the first JRPG I've played in years and the first one I've completed.I tried playing an RPGMaker game with Final Fantasy style combat the other day. where you have a sort of turn meter that refills so you can't spend ages planning and I got my ass kicked by starting enemies ;-;
>>321658319
Is there a translation patch for the Famicom version of Phantasia or should I just go for the GBA version?
>>321659726
NO. do not do the GBA version by any means. Its a horrible, HORRIBLE port with really really bad VA work
Here
Look up "Absolute Zero Translations"

You know what was Stiff? Dias' combat. Sword strike, Sword strike, Upper strike ...cooldown...... Sword strike sword strike upper strike, BLAZING STRIKE ...cool down.....
The Ais in SO are horrible. Rena can't heal worth shit, her entire character is a lie. Kenedy is the only good party member, and you're forced to use him because of the wisemen battle.
I imagine this game would have been more well-received if anyone understood how the combo system worked at the start.
>>321661045
... I never figured out how any of the shit in SaGa Frontier 2 worked. Didn't play enough of the first to form any strong memories.

>>321659605
It was probably someone spouting the tired "Golden Sun only seems good because there was nothing else" meme. I play tons and tons of RPGs, and Golden Sun continually stays towards the top of my list. Mainly because psynergy is one of the best implementations of magic ever. There is a cohesion between battle skills, puzzle solving, and story-telling throughout the entire games that few other games manage to achieve. It's one of the main things to look for literary fiction as well if you want quality world-building. The characters themselves are anime/10, and the game tends to be easy if you know what you're doing but that's pretty standard for a JRPG. The Djinn, hidden dungeons, items, and linking the first two games set them apart from a lot of other games.
I really liked Tales of Symphonia. I like that it was turn based, but rather than wait for it to be your turn, you had to block enemy attacks. It gave you something to do and it prevented you from having to use potions every 20 seconds because blocking drastically reduced the damage. Also, it felt vaguely like a fighting game because you didn't pick attacks from a menu, you used directional controls to attack.
DEMON FANG
>>321654023
It's not just the best, it's literally the only JRPG with a decent combat system.
>>321659596
>tfw using your entire team effectively in a fight
Valkyrie Profile
Valkyrie Profile 2
>>321661447
Tales of Symphonia is not turn-based at all. It is considered an active battle system because you have access to the characters' entire repertoire of actions at all times. You can even just run around in the 3D field if you hold a button. What you're describing sounds more like Tales of Phantasia, where you press a button and lose control of the character until they go perform the skill and come back to where they were.
>>321656572
All rpgs need a 3x speed setting
>>321661681
MAH NIGGA
Tales
Star Ocean 3/4
Mario and Luigi
Arc Rise Fantasia
some others I can't remember the name of
Radiant Historia
Bravely Default
and
TWEWY
are all really good, not one truly better than the other
just a matter of taste
Radiant Historia was the best out of the three in my book
In my honest experience, it depends on what the combat has to offer. I don't mind bare-bones turn based, but at the same time, if theres nothing like an engaging story behind it, theres really no drive to play.
Final Fantasy VI - Generic ATB
Okage: The Shadow king - Generic TB
Xenogears - Dial up combo system.
Chrono Trigger - Real time ATB
Earthbound - Time Turn based combat
Mario and Luigi - Command action system
Paper Mario - Command action system
Ar Tonelico - Linear-wait Turn based system
Ar Tonelico II - Command action system
Rogue Galaxy - Action Battle System
Kingdom Hearts - Action Battle system
Tales of (Classic) - Linear Action motion Battle system
Tales of (Modern Post-abyss) - Raidal Motion Axis Battle system
Tales of (New age Post-Xillia) Cross Motion Axis Battle Link system
SMT: Persona/Nocturne - Press Turn battle system
The World Ends with You - Action Real Time
Ni No Kuni - Action Wait battle system
Eternal Sonata - Time Wait battle system
Xenoblade - Action-Time Battle Ring system
>>321661554
Why? Grandia is literally barebones Turn based. its no different then final fantasy :/

Lufia 2
>>321661681

>>321662851
Tales of has gone through three battle engines over the course of 25 years.
Most Famous is where they started, the LMABS. Which, as its name implies is Linear. This includes games from Phantasia, Destiny, Eternia, Destiny 2 Destiny R, Rebirth, Symphonia Legendia and Hearts. Symphonia is LMABS because it's locked to a grid, you cannot free-run, and the camera shifts with your movement, not the player. Enemies can move around the field, but are always locked to a specifc gridline. Liek a moving train track.
RMABS developed with Abyss and allowed 3D radial movement, and Free-running options. Most noteable are Abyss, Vesperia, Innocence, DoTNW and Graces F.
XMABLS is the newest, and an add-on to the RMABS. X being for Cross, ITs what utilizes the new 2D-plane shifting mechanics with things like the Chromatus, and the spritual links introdcued in Xillia, Xillia 2, and Zesteria.
