It's a game that criticizes other jRPGs. It has a plot that's self-aware and has memorable characters. That ability to make a character friendly or enemy is brilliant, if not innovative. Oh! It also contains a battle system that is not random, but through skill!

I'm just glad to finally get an RPG that doesn't lean on RNG for 90% of its mechanics.
It's not perfect though. The genocide run is pretty tedious. And the final boss of the pacifist run undermines itself by removing any kind of lose scenario.

Uh... it's a pretty fun game with an excellent soundtrack and some wonderful boss fights. The Pacifist Ending has some TTGL feels, and it has pretty humorous writing throughout. It's just that the fanbase is inane and spouts that it's the best game ever blindly.
Haven't played it yet, but the music is great, the gameplay is pretty cool with the different battlesystem.
Storytelling methods in this game are pretty cool too.

He knows why Chara did ("It wasn't for a very happy reason"+"chara hated humanity" probably means she was going for suicide. This was explained during the Genocide route with the turtle shopkeeper. Their original plan was to gain the 7 human souls to destroy the barrier and subsequently destroy humanity. After seeing how Flowey turned out with only six, you can only imagine what it'd be like with 7. Besides, a monster with only 1 soul had a fuckton of power. The problem is, Asgore was a pussy and went back on his rage-filled promises. The turtle guy said they had come to an agreement that Agore wouldn't go with Toriel's idea since they'd be killed off anyway, may as well live a little bit longer rather than be annihilated by the humans. It didn't matter in the end anyway because a single child could eradicate everyone anyway.

The reason why people like it so much is because it appeals to the lowest common denominator with its story and humor, although the latter is mostly ironic (see skellies) but it flies over people's heads and they don't understand it.
They like it so much because they have never experienced something like this because they started playing video games with the 360/Skyrim.
Undertale is just a quirky nod to Earthbound, but the core gaming audience has shifted significantly. A few years ago even the main demographic of games had quite a liking to the medium and they have played games from almost every era with a lot of them being SNES, PS1 and PS2 games.
Now though, the core audience has shifted from those aforementioned people to people with no experience in video games, a short attention span and no brain at all.

It's a nice comfy game that doesn't renew the RPG genre, but it's functional, fun, and has a lot of detail compared to the average AAA title. It has some flaws, specially on the story (which is decent but cheesy and fan-fictiony at some parts) and the graphics (which are decent too but MUH PIXELINDIEGAMELULZ), but people on tumblr act like it's the GOAT because the characters are charismatic (at least I think so, cuz I've only seen fan art from the characters there, and not a lot of people actually talking about the game).

Persona 2 did monster non-violent resolutions first.
I'm playing it right now. The ability to spare enemies, while somewhat unique, isn't revolutionary or some mind-blowing mechanic. The writing can be clever and humorous at times, but again is nothing to get excited over. The characters range from annoying to average. The music is good. 7/10 it's the best I can do.
I'm genuinely convinced that people who claim that this game is the "best ever" are doing so either ironically or for hipster cred. In the world of 8/16-bit RPGs I'd much rather re-play Chrono Trigger, FF4, FF6, or any of the dozens of other masterpieces that are available.

I think people that get really, really into Undertale just haven't experienced the things it's drawing on.
If you've never played shin megami tensei, or the mother games, or an rpg that lets you progress primarily through dialogue, you're going to look at that stuff and have your mind blown.
