I think it's kind of unfair to put 1, in with all the others. It was trying to do a very different thing, and be Supernatural Resident Evil with swords, rather than a stylish combo chaining game.
Capcom should just remake DMC1 with the assets of DMC4. Taking some liberties with adding new weapons and enemies of course.
The game in the series that's one of the best in a lot of aspects but not played much due to dated combat and camera. It would be pretty cheap, there's not a lot of cutscenes that eat of the budget, and like I said they have a lot to work of with DMC4. Both DMC and DmC fans could appreciate it, many DMC fans have never played 1, and DmC fans would have an easy time understanding the story because it lines up pretty well with how DmC ended. Corrupted Vergil, White haired Dante, that stuff. (Of course it's OLD CANON but DMC1's story similar enough that DmC fans will understand it.)
Just saying; from a business standpoint it seems to be the smartest thing to do now that the DMC fanbase is split up into two camps.
