They both have their uses as compressed image formats. PNG is ideal for huge images with relatively small color palettes. The strenght of PNG is how small files can be as long as the color palette is also small.
JPG is better for images with large color palettes, filesize wise. It can't do transparency though.

If you are an artist, you want this! You want the quality of your image to be preserved as best as possible, right? Right. That's why you should use png.
jpg can compress images to a smaller filesize. But it's at the cost of color degradation. When you zoom in on jpgs, then you might notice these off-color pixels throughout the image. Those are called "artifacts". And they aren't very noticeable at a glance. But upon further inspection, you will notice how the artifacts muddy the color. That's why it's painful when gaming sites post jpgs for sprite-drawn games. Artifacts are very noticeable on low palette images. Websites use jpgs because the smaller filesize means less bandwidth use. And everyone wants to reduce bandwidth use as much as possible, because it can get costly.
jpg compression does look better in modern day. But don't be fooled, jpg format has reduced the quality of your work. Even if it's unrecognizable.

png = format for artistic purposes.
