FF's "great" writing and characters are on par with your typical shonen manga/anime that kids and autists praise.
The gameplay is hardly there as most of the games like to railroad you just to show you its shit plot and/or cutscenes.
Only the music in this series stays consistently good. Everything else ranges from mediocre to bad.

There are really only a few franchises that deserve to be in the running for "best gaming series" but you might as well toss out that statement on being objective because it doesn't exist for gaming outside of is it or isn't it a broken unplayable mess.

The world is more full than every single other FF, literally this has already been proven, eveyr other FF is empty as fuck overworld with linear towns and dungeons, XV is a massive open world with tons of shit everywhere, monsters roaming on the field, fully free roamable.
It has full fledged Action RPG combat with more freedom and variety and strategy involved than any other FF with more depth in attacking alone in XV than nay other FF has for attacking, where you can do more with Noctis alone than you can an entire party in any other FF

The series always had varying degrees of quality but until the late PS2 era it more or less maintained its pedigree.
Then shit like lots of mediocre spinoffs including the VII anthology cancer came out, and along with X-2, XII and the XIII trilogy they dragged the series reputation through the dirt. XV looking like it's going to be absolute garbage about a band of dickslurping faggots doesn't help either.

It's because Square have constantly tried to change their battle mechanics drastically, often they come out fine, mostly enjoyable, but then you get a bug stinking FFXIII and it doesn't feel goodfor 3 games too.
They should adopt the "ain't broke, don't fix it" and use some of the already existing systems, people play the older games to death and they were genuinely surprised when Bravely Default did well because they didn't think people wanted a turn based system at all when a well done turn based system is a great battle system to play with. Especially when most RPGs have taken the action route it's kinda refreshing to have in a newer game.

If you're a 14 year old, soul -searching edgemeister, maybe. Once it went the way of the anime, FF became the home for contrived melodrama and really really really shitty androgynous character designs as well aa underaged sex symbols. It does a lot of things which it never builds up enough to to deserve it. The only thing that is absolutely astounding each time is the heartbreaking, beautiful and atmospheric soundtrack.
