/v/, I have a dumb question
How did 'boss' become such a standard term that's still used to this day?
It just makes sense.

JUST
It's as much of a generic term you can give for a leader of a group.
boss commands those above themselves usually of higher importance so if they add a super strong special enemy after normal ones they'll call it a boss

Not even MacGyver could do something as stupid as this pic.
You were right.
That is a very dumb question.
Not sure if I have ever seen a more dumb question on /v/, and I've been here for years.

in an average level in a game there are a bunch of bad guys who acts like cannon fodder, then when you reach the end you got a big bad guy to deal with that usually doesn't go down in one hit. a "Boss" works in this context.

because the big baddies are the "bosses" of the small baddies

I believe it came from Beat em up games like Streets of Rage and Final Fight, where you literally beat up the bad guys boss at the end of each level.
"Team leader" or "Supervisor" just doesn't sound like a guy you want to bother fighting.
>Be youngin
>Playing Namco Museum Vol. 1 on the PS1
>Always used to call an extra life a free man
>Older brother hears me cheering while playing Galaga because I was saying, "I got a free man! I need more free men!"
>Brother comes into call me gay ND that I like men and leaves the room
>Never call lives free men ever again
Cuz its da bawwwsssss
it's the perfect word for the climactic bad guy

Started as a term in beat em ups. You'd fight hordes of generic, easily defeated enemies that are carbon copies of each other found throughout the game and at the end of each stage, you'd fight their "boss," a unique enemy not usually found anywhere else in the game and a lot tougher to defeat.
The term then adapted a broader definition to mean any enemy during a stage that was more difficult and required more skill to defeat, usually minibosses during the middle of the stage and bosses at the end of the stage.

Regular enemies are just grunts and don't deserve health bars bosses order around the regular enemies and has a health bar/takes more hits to kill.
From what I understand, OP. The term was coined after you had games where you faught guys whose healthbar read "BOSS" because they wanted to establish you were fighting the guy who lead the other guys and boss was just a translation that had a boon of being a short word. In beat-em ups you usually faught punks and then fought someone like Belger who signed everyone's checks. The term caught on.

i always thought all the smaller enemies worked for the final boss

What?
>>321611398
Boss it's supposed to be the final challenge in a segment that tests what you've learned there. With the final boss being about what you've learned in the whole game.
It's only normal to have them in a game.

That's something I was wondering today. I think this might have something to do with it:

Just works well and there aren't a bunch of other terms that sound as nice.
Renegade was the first game to do it to signify that one of the enemies was the one you had to beat and had a meter.
Everybody just liked it and copied it.

Because it's assumed most of the enemies are mooks and the big bad is their boss. It's the same for movies, comics, and hierarchies of groups etc...The boss is the guy in charge and he tends to have gotten there by being the baddest of all the mooks in some manner. It's a trope older than books themselves.

Does that mean Final Fight and SOR's grunts, were all canonicly stronger than other games' bosses?
No wonder Cody is so high tier.
