Is it possible to beat chapter 12 without level 50 skells? That shield and add phase is hell and the one time I bypass the whole phase I get my skells destroyed by the monster at the end and the whole 'lol it's the end of the game no go back' bullshit means that if a Skell is destroyed once throughout any of the encounters I have to exit to the title screen.

Keep in mind the Ares 90 might be very impressive at first, but for end-game level shit you want a hyper customized regular 60 skell. Due to the simple matter of them having WAY more slots to stick augments into/having more traits as a whole.
Ares 90 is basically there as a stepping stone (or, some would say, a crutch) to get you closer to your dream 60 skell.

Pharsis and Telethia are still assholes though because they take like only 15% HP loss from Ares' super cannons. You need Anti-Ether reflect to not get fucked over and you also need some resistance for whatever the fuck aura it does on the ground. Might be Ether resistance, I don't know yet.
Or you could just grind forever and one shot it with a super meme ray-gun build.

That reminds me of my favorite moment playing XCX. I'm pretty late game with a party of level 50 skells, and decide to take on the giant sandworm thing. I'm doing alright, I'm not that powerful so it's taking a while but HP is holding steady on the entire party so it's a matter of time. Once it was at about 60%, spore weather rolled in. It had taken a while to get it even that low, so I decided to keep fighting anyways. I'm locked on so I just need to close in for art range anyways.
All of a sudden, my party members start dying off, and I have no idea what's going on. I assume it entered its berserk mode and killed them. Cursing at their incompetence, I continue the fight on my own, as it's down to 20% or so now. I start taking damage too, but I figure I can damage race it down.
I finally manage to kill it, and feel relieved. But the battle music doesn't stop. Then my skell gets killed (it was pretty low at this point), literally at the exact same time as the spore weather clears, and I can finally see what's been going on.
You see, that particular sandworm summons another sandworm as it gets low on HP, and the spore weather happened to coincide just perfectly so I never saw it until it was too late. Was like a horror movie, almost.

Question from a new player; I just finished the training mission and while I was running around talking to to NPCs in New LA I got the Selfie quest. When I talked to Selfie Lin had a heart pop up after my response during the conversation. Then a few minutes later both Lin and Elma had hearts pop up over their heads at the start of a battle. I assume this part of some affinity system. But why is this happening and what does raising affinity do? For that matter can I lower affinity and if so, what happens then?

There are so many retarded annoyances with this game from narrative to the rap music to dumb quest objectives and party systems but despite that I love this game so much. There isn't any. If you want your excavator to use level 60 armor, you gotta make a level 60 skell and strip it of its stuff.
This is why the only purpose of the excavator is to serve as a cheap superweapon platform.
What else has good Skell gear drops aside from the mechanoid prones in Sylvalum/Caludros? I've already farmed up my Phoenix/G-Buster/G2-Buster.

What's the best art setup for assault rifles? Currently maxing out duelist while using the lightsaber, once that's done I'd like to go back to a class that gives four skill slots.
No idea what the best class/weapon combo is. So right now I'm a Bastion guy with Longsword and Assault Rifle. With +Therm +Crit on Blazed and MaxHP skills.
Feels tanky as fuck and the burst with Incendiary Edge isn't bad either.
"Best" class is drifter after you've finished all the others for the weapon unlocks. No stat boost can make up for a extra skill slot. However duelist and FMJ are important for cheesing if you use longsword/dual guns for blossom dance overdrive bullshit

Not all mims on the skelleton crew are soldiers, some are civilian engineers and such. The purpose of the mims is also to make sure whatever world they build for the real bodies is comfortable and functional enough. Plus there's the psychological aspect.
