Now that the dust has settled, which was the better game series?

I had more fun with unreal myself, but I really like both.

UT was the superior game in all aspects.

>tfw only yesterday i learned about Monster Hunt mod for UT99...
>>
Unreal for fun
Quake for competition
>>
I always liked UT better
but i was too young to tell you which one is superior
>>
>>321581924
Had more fun with Quake.
>>

Unreal Facing worlds.
>>
>>321583923
I just bought the Unreal bundle in the Steam sale and I have to ask, why does everyone love that map so much?
I don't get it really. It's alright and looks sorta cool, but beyond that it's pretty basic.

I like it for the music and balanced gameplay
>>
>>321581924
Quake was far superior and much more popular. UT movement and netcode was always inferior.

Still fond memories of DMing on facing worlds and in the first unreal.
>>
Unreal has more interesting weapons(2 functions each) and maps.

quake's movement is better tho
>>
UT99 is still the best of the series.
2004 is good, sure... but it lacks the atmosphere 99 has.
Also 99 has far superior music.
>>
>>321581924
ut2k4 is amazing, but the shock rifle should be removed from the game.
>>
One of the two series still exists so UT
>>
Aesthetics: Unreal
Mechanics: Quake

Why? It's the defining weapon of the game. High skill and flashy as fuck.
>>
>>321581924
Just recently got Quake 1-3 and Unreal Gold, all I need is UT99. I played against the bots on Unreal, only went into the first 2 maps. Looks very nice for a dated game, its mechanics on the other hand are a bit hard to get used to from games like CSS.
>>
>i5 6600k

Easy to get a steady 144fps in UT4, /v/?
>>
>>321587563
>UT movement and netcode
This has been fixed for a couple years now, but, it was far too late. It feels like LAN even at 200ping now.
>>
>>321589819
Ultra settings are quite demanding but it should be possible on high, largely depends on the maps tho
>>
>>321581924
Quake for MP
Unreal for SP

What would it take to make a good new Quake game?
Seeing as how D44M is a total fuckup, I've lost all faith.

Yeah, sure people say "try out Reflex bro", but that's not what we need.
It's a carbon copy of CMPA. It feels like one of those early Quake ripoffs you used to see everywhere.
How can you breath new life into the arena shooter genre without casualizing the fuck out of it anyway?

UT 2004 is the gold standard of arena FPS. Arena FPS has digressed and devolved ever since. It is a shame.

I have not tried the UT4 beta. Press X to doubt, etc.

You have that backwards bro.

you can't. it's dead bro.

never forgot how great quake is for single player. I was thinking of trying to get a /v/ future vs fantasy quest server going...

>never forgot how great quake is for single player
It's not that great actually. The atmosphere is great, but Doom is much more fun to actually play.
>>
>>321590358
But Unreal > Q1/2/4 and Q3 > UT
>>
>>321590329
I played the tutorial and then one match. The movement mechanics are deeper, weapons don't feel as great as UT99 but they're definitely not bad, and the visual design isn't something I'm into, but it all boils down to a lot of fun. Just have to pray for a decent community to get it really going.
>>
>>321591087
>but Doom is much more fun to actually play.

no it isn't. doom can't have complexity anywhere near quake and quake is just infinitely better because of the art and atmosphere and movement abilities
>>
>>321591228

The movement mechanics don't really shine until you're using them in instagib, imo

And the weapons are okay, they feel like they do more damage, but I always played 99 with Godlike bots, so I dunno. The biorifle is a lot more useful now, at least
>>
>>321591121
Singleplayer:
Q1 > Unreal > > Q2 > > > Q4

Multi:
UT99 = Q3 > UT04 > UT15 = Qlive > Q1 > > Q2 = Q4
>>
>>321591271
We are talking about single player Quake 1, right? Because you're wrong. Guns feel like shit, the extra movement barely adds anything, the enemies are just bad and while the atmosphere is good (mostly due to grungy textures and based Trent Reznor soundtrack) it's fucking inconsistent and mostly makes no sense.

Quake has its strong points, but Doom is overall a better game. If only they managed to combine the two, but id had no idea what exactly makes their games great.
>>
>>321592536
>Guns feel like shit, the extra movement barely adds anything

so youve never actually played quake1 sp. gotcha

The first unreal didn't have facing worlds

Series?
Quake 1 & 2 are great in single player as well as multi, Unreal was pretty boringly paced and was wonky mouse control dispite good potential. UT vs. Quake 3 is really a tossup. I like Quake 3 more for it's Quakey physics and weapons but UT is a more 'complete' game with better single player.
Quake 4 is shit, but so is Unreal 2.
UT sequels are fine but don't really match the original, so I choose Quake.
>>
>>321595186
>Unreal was pretty boringly paced and was wonky mouse contro
Am I on bizarro /v/?
>>
I grew up on UT and the other Unreal games and didn't play Quake until later when I was a teen so I'm heavily biased toward Unreal.

Unreal + Return to Na Pali is probably the best atmosphere in any video game I've ever played.

Quake: 9/10
Quake 2: 5/10
Quake 3: 9/10
Quake 4: 5/10

Unreal: 7/10
Unreal Tournament: 10/10
Unreal 2: 4/10
Unreal Tournament 2003/4: 10/10
Unreal Championship 2: ???
Unreal Tournament 3: 6/10

Unreal wins, in my opinion
>>
>>321596048
Quake 1, 3, and Unreal are all 10/10s

I'm pretty new to both and if ind quake a lot easier to aim/shoot idk why
im comparing quake live to UT 2015
>>
>>321595349
Unreal. Not UT, just so we're on the same page. It does have input problems, and holy fuck is it slow going.
>>
idk why cuz i have a low IQ but UT feels like shit to me while Quake feels really fun
>>
>>321597490
Yes, Unreal, and no I don't agree at all.
>>
q3 for dm/ffa stuff
ut for team stuff
>>
as a series?
unreal

but the best game is quake 3, by like, a lot
>>
>>321581924
Both are fun, but Quake is just so much smoother, vertical and momentum-based that it really is leagues above anything in the UT series.
Unreal was just boring.
>>
Does anyone play the UT games online any more?

Wut?
Quake 2 was pretty good. It also brought plenty of new feature on the table and/or popularized some.
>>
Hey /v/, anyone up for Q3A? I haven't played in a very long time but my friends always said I was decent.

Or just both UT and Quack3. They're both equally great.
