Holy fuck this game has me sweating at the starting screen alone.

It's hard to continue it with how tense it makes me. Did anyone else feel like this when they were playing?

>IGN criticized it for being "unforgiving"
How is that a bad thing in a game?
>>

GOTY 2014 for me
>>
>>321581573
it means the game was too hard waaah not enough muh diversity not enough muh cinematic experience press qte win the game
>>
Enjoy it OP, during the last third of the game the alien isn't even scary anymore, it just becomes a nuisance.
>>
>>321581573
It's great, although the ending is weak and if you suck and die too much the tenseness lessens.
>>
Alien Isolation is an actual survival horror game, not the third person shooters disguised as horror games that these journos have been playing for the previous console generation.

They can't handle things like save points.
>>
>>321581573
I liked it up until I snuck up on some guy with a gun, killed him, then realized I can't even pick up his weapon.

GOTY 2014

The journalists who reviewed it badly are literal casuals who gave up 30 minutes in.
>>
Is this game worth buying all the DLC for?
>>
>>321582314
If you're just playing it for the story, not really. They are just more challenge modes. There are some new audio logs but that's about it.
>>
>last 10% of the game
>trying to leave staff game rooms
>nope turn the power back on lol
>by the way the generator is 100 yards away, also here's a forced alien encounter
>only 150 flamer fuel
>mfw

>>321581573

Probably the best game of 2014, definitely one of the best horror games of all time.

The crafting system was totally unnecessary and kind of an annoyance but the rest was solid.
>>
even the slow walking portions were great because everything is beautiful, even on my toaster.

I played this a month or two ago. Great game, but the ending was lousy.

You can play it with me, we'll hold hands if it gets too nerve-wracking.

Is this game friendly with toasters?
>>
>>321582874

Outlast stops being scary during the second half of the game, though. You pretty much get used to everything at that point. I felt Alien Isolation was a better cat and mouse game.
>>
>>321581573
My brother just gave this to me for Christmas today. Looking forward to popping that baby in and getting spooked.

>>

Turns out it was just a "spoooOOOoooky ghost" the whole time in Outlast.
Was great up until that point.
>>
I just hope you're playing it on the second-hardest difficulty, the way it's meant to be played.

Anything less and you're throwing the experience in the garbage.
>>
>>321583257
Yes. I was running on max settings with 60fps for nearly the whole thing with an underperforming 280X
>>321583913
And some of the game mechanics are broken on the DLC extra difficulty. Still do-able, but if I was to play it again I'd have just kept it to the original max.
>>

You got played, son.

I just pretend Prometheus isn't a part of the alien franchise

Prometheus did manage to shit on everything without adding anything redeemable.

Wont be able to once the sequels come out. Itll "somehow" tie everything in.
>>
>>321585612
And it'll be as memorable and canon as AvP Requiem.
>>
>>321583297
i'd argue that it feels the same about 1/4 into the game.
>>
>>321585772
Hey now anon, nothing, and I mean NOTHING will ever be as bad as AvP2.
>>
>>321585959
>tfw AvP2 is my favorite bad movie to watch
Something about it makes it way too enjoyable for me
>>
>>321585959
I'm sorry but the characterization in Prometheus was little better than the high school love drama in Requiem.

David was the only half-decent thing about the whole film, but in the second half he didn't really feel like a functioning character anymore.
>>
>>321582874
I only played 30 minutes of Outlast because I wasn't feeling the gameplay. I kinda feel that way about all horror games really. I love horror movies but horror games are a pain to play for me.
>>
Turning the music off or way down makes the game way less scary. The music when an alien is near is what makes it seem so tense.

>>321586218
Fair point, but at least I could see whats going on in Prometheus.
>>
>>321587269
Hiding in lockers and those other things is always a dumb move.
>>
One element that doesn't get rightly criticized is the lack of balanced supplies throughout the game. I was swimming in ammo and materials for the large majority of the game.
>>
You ever think the alien is just as spooked as you?
Think about it, its just sneaking around, doesn't understand this crazy manmade shit, and keeps hearing noises like lockers slamming and bangs and shit in the distance. It goes to investigate, and there's no one there, gets spooked to even check underneath tables and stuff thinking there's something spooky going on, then it bumps into you and its like a damn jump scare to the alien as well so it lashes out and murders you.
poor little ayylmao.

no.

It doesn't perceive things the same way you do. It just goes into kill mode.
>>
>>321588527
Aliens work like cats, sure they jump and get scared but .3 seconds later they're already attacking you.

Reminder OP makes this thread nearly every day in a desperate attempt to shill the game

>spit in the face to the original movie and its fans
It's not based on the original movie, if it was you'd be playing as sigourney weaver.
People like you need to be killed.
>>
>>321590710
>a spit in the face to the original movie and its fans

They got a few things wrong and ultimately failed in their goal to be completely true to the film, but it wasn't an insult.
>>
>>321590710
Only a minute and a half in and they've already lost credibility.
>>
>>321590710
I'm a fan of RLM but pre-rec is a load of shit, and only partly because of jack. They don't have good opinions, and they can't even back up their shit opinions in a way that makes sense.

I beat it on Normal and went back to it recently on Insane and can't even get past the medical pavilion. It sends my blood pressure through the roof.
>>
>>321583456
Play it with headphones. The sound and music design add an extra element to the experience.
>>
>>321588117
Absolutely wrong.
>>
>>321594354

it matters when they play cinematic experiences
>>
>>321595194
Since the game mechanics are never explained, I didn't know your ability to hold your breathe actually depleted your health and kept dying when hiding in a locker since my first play through was insane. I exclusively hid behind boxes, in shadows, and under things.

One design failure of the game: I looked forward to dark places in the game because the alien would have a harder time seeing me. That seems like it is backwards.
>>
>>321595883
That isn't what this game is.
>>
>>321595789
You weren't around during release when /v/ was full of posts crying about how much time they wasted in lockers.

I never touched them and finished it on the hardest difficulty without much trouble.
>>
I picked this up at thanksgiving and pretty much stopped when I got to the part when I have to find the doctor. I think its because I put it on the hardest and the alien is just way too smart, should I turn it down?
>>
>>321587269
Lockers usually should be your last resort since it limits vision, is loud as fuck, leaves you immobile, and is the only "hiding spot" the Alien will specifically search without any reason were with tables and desks it usually won't check them unless it has an indicator you're there such as loud noises.
>>
its a great game initially, then you realize the alien is on such a tiny leash because it only stalks you and pops out at the same moments all the time. there's a decent mod that lets it wander more but for the most part its becomes a predictable instance of red light green light. then you find the flame thrower and the game is pretty much over but then it just drags for another 4 hours. it was still very well produced and had excellent sound design.
>>
>>321596369
Game kept going for me because on insane difficulty you get about 4 puffs before you are completely out of the flamethrower. The risk/reward of saving fuel was pretty compelling for me.
>>
>>321596273
Turn it down to Hard if you really need to. Don't go below that though.
>>
>>321581573
i actually had to quit because that game scared and stressed the fuck out of me. it was great but holy shit its terrifying.

I played and finished it last year on Hard difficulty as that was the "recommended experience" which I agree with.
Now with a new rig I'm replaying it on Nightmare and I'm actually surprised and terrified at how much of a difference in difficulty it is.
I can't find supplies to literally save my life (I've only made 1 medkit so far), an android grabbing you without full health is practically a death sentence, and the Alien is so fucking hyper-sensitive to anything I do (its come sprinting at full speed when I knocked over a fucking chair)
Hell even things that wasn't a state of the area or occurence before has happened, for example the Alien was in one of the rooms in the same area before you first encounter it (when it pops out of the vents in the cutscene) and he took a moment to fuck off into a vent and didn't show up till the cutscene.
I'm wondering if I'll be able to even complete this, shits hard.

>Did anyone else feel like this when they were playing?

No, because it was a piss poor horror game - the AI was predictable and easily exploited. Even on the hardest difficulty, you were drowning in parts and ammo, and they decided to water it down even further by giving you the flamethrower and nail gun. I have no idea why this game gets so much praise when a few key design decisions turned it into a really mediocre experience.
