The story being just another "Bowser kidnapped the Princess and wants to take over the mushroom kingdom" rather than some of the more detailed yarns the previous games used.
The writing and characters falling flat. Paper Jam didn't make me laugh once. It was just "Evil characters insult their paper versions" and "good characters get along with their paper versions." It had one joke that it used for the whole game.
It was really disappointing to see the game follow in Stick Star's footsteps and have bland, NSMB "worlds" like field, forest, desert, beach, ice and Bowser Castle. We've really downgraded since the like of Rogueport, the Orient Express rip-off, Boggly Woods and some of the more inspired locations.
If you're not a fan of the Toad Collecting minigame, you're gonna have a bad time. It's re-used again and again. Nearly every area has 2 or 3 of these sections. You need at least 80% Toad completion to reach the final location. So it's not as though the tedium is optional.
Papercraft battles were exactly what we thought they'd be. They're this games Dream Luigi and Giga Bowser segments, and just as unfun.
The Paper Mario tie-in went nowhere, just Paper versions of characters and enemies and a few bits of Sticker Star assets littered throughout the game world.
The music is good, and it's nice they ramped up the difficulty and turned the tutorials way down. Sadly everything else just paled in comparison to the other RPGs. It's sitting just above Sticker Star for me personally.
