I personally through Ascention was just some horrible prequel done to test their ability at making a quality game before continuing the actual story.

Second. I'd be fine with them just putting God of War as a franchise to bed given that there have already been six games, but the video game industry can never just let a thing end. If they want to keep going with the series I would rather they introduced a new protagonist, and I'd even be cool with them casting Kratos as the villain.
Kratos had a decent character arc in the first game but he's been a pretty crap protagonist since then, and watching him be an over-the-top ultraviolent dickhead to everyone has long since lost its novelty.
3 wasn't anything special. Ascension was shit.
Don't have much hope for the next unless David get's back on board and steers the franchise back on course.

This is something that baffles me endlessly as the industry gets worse and worse.
You'd think at least one publisher would pit a small crew onto a small project to create a small-budget game for an actual platform - even just something experimental - but no. If they do that, it IMMEDIATELY has to go mobile because they automatically assume nobody buys small games on consoles or PC.
This just falls behind suits not knowing shit about videogames, and just looking at sales charts and budget balances and shit. They don't see things the way people who actually make vidya see things. They only see in black and white. Money and Profit.

The industry also hadn't become the disgustingly huge corporate-run field of giants it currently is now, so smaller studios could afford to do experimental shit and try new things. Now a days, presenting something new to a director that isn't under an already-known IP just get's you laughed out of their penthouse office and sent back to your desk to work 20 hours overtime.

Another reason why gaming is slowly spiraling into a blackened void. There's no fucking focus. Just broadening after broadening after broadening in pathetically vain attempts at drawing in more people.
It is hilarious that they try to humanize Kratos, even though the game is still a shallow shitfest about a dude killing all the ancient Greek gods for shock values and gore.
Maybe they should start using other myths around the world. If they want to have Kratos just travelling the world and fucking up gods because they looked at him wrong, or just make up action games, its up to them

God of War was a new game, yes, but it wasn't necessarily a risk. Jaffe's previous title (Twisted Metal Black) was critically acclaimed and sold a fair amount of copies.
Sony Santa Monica also assists smaller devs in putting out smaller games like this year's Everybody's Gone to the Rapture.

That's always been the point of the games though.
They were never about story or plot. Those were minor things fed in to propel the plot to move the player forward so they could kill more shit.
It's a game that raises gameplay above story.

But the story still held some tidbit of quality despite it's shallowness. 3 and Ascension were just shit though. Kratos does not need to be humanized. It's not necessary. Everything you needed to know about him was told in the first game. There was never anything more that needed to be known.
Imagine if Kratos was fighting Abrahamic religions.
The possibilities are pretty numerous.
The last boss should be Kratos vs Jesus, Moses and Allah.

God of War 1's gameplay served the story, and vice versa.
It was good so that you wouldn't stop to think if what you were doing was wrong, and by the ending Kratos realizes he done fucked up. The entire game was building up to that point.
2 was the best, especially in the enemy and boss department.
Literally the only shortcoming is that it was made before they came up with the better item system in 3, as opposed to everything being tied to your magic.

Unless the next God of War takes place in a completely different universe with a different protagonist there's no possible way it can make any sense.
