watched 2012/2013 gdqs, decided to start speedrunning myself. the events used to be better, but you guys don't know the half of it. gdq is a company run by complete incompetents who constantly fuck over their runners by enforcing political correctness, selectively enforcing rules, refusing to offer runners in the event a waiver for registering (which costs upwards of $30, insignificant but factor in the cost of flying / hotel), and not doing the jobs they're paid to do on time for myriad reasons. The last point led to runners canceling for financial reasons - no way of knowing if your run is in the marathon so no way to buy (hugely expensive) airfare earlier.
The worst part is that all the people who have either the good standing (old speedrunner a from SDA / SRL) or the popularity (trihex, witwix, calebhart) to change things absolutely refuse to stand up to the organization that has spent the last two years not listening to a thing they say. big runners will tell you to your face that they're fed up with the way these things are handled, and next event they'll be there meeting with their groupies, hanging out with friends "because it's still the biggest meetup", with a run in or not.
there's really no hope for speedrunning because the hobby comprises mostly manchildren ingratiating themselves to anyone willing to give them a platform.
watch small marathons like Deucecon if you want a small piece of what GDQ used to be, because they'll probably never stream the fun stuff happening at the events.

i know it seems that these events would be a little better if they didn't separate the runners and commentators from the audience, let the runners speak their minds more, and were a little less formal in general, but it's more complicated than that. they've made themselves into a small convention. these events used to be 100-ish speedrunners crammed into a convention center / hotel, and before that they were 30-ish speedrunners crammed into mike's basement / essentia's house.
the way that gdq has set itself up as a million-dollar charity event has guaranteed that it's difficult to reconcile the two distinct halves of the event:

It depends on the game, usually it saves time in dialogue length and text boxes, some versions of games are different too, so certain bugs and glitches aren't always compatible. Halo 2 is usually ran in Japanese for example, and it saves about 10 seconds compared to English. For a world record every little helps.

The problem with speedrunning is simple
Faggots made it more about drama than the runs and the games.
Whether it be charity drama, management drama, certain individual drama, people somehow managed to turn something as pure as playing a video game fast into a fucking daytime soap.
This is the true reason of what went wrong with speedrunning and if you're one of those fags who likes the drama, then you are part of the problem.
Last I checked, I wanted to watch speedruns, not General Hospital.

2. Focus on the game, whether it be designwise (I.e. screen real estate) or focus/commentarywise.
3. Allow freedom otherwise for a fun casual atmosphere which still puts all the focus onto the game

I think it's a millenial invention that really encapsulates the issues the next generation of adults will struggle with. That is they're unable to really do anything; they're a slave to remix culture, and this is their idea of an "original contribution."
