Don't grind, it only makes the game harder.
Your usual Jrpg cakewalk, just be sure to grind early game and go in blind so some of the better parts of the game aren't spoiled for you.

Think Elder Scrolls level scaling but on a much higher scale. It affects enemy strength, the types of enemies, the materials you find in the world (mining, etc.) and all sorts of stuff. You can theoretically screw yourself over by leveling so much you're unable to get the stuff you need to upgrade your gear.

It's less that grinding is bad, and more that grinding beyond your gear makes the game hard. The noticeable bit isn't monster damage, but health pools. There can be a huge difference in boss health pool between 10 battles ranks.
You are more dependent on gear for doing damage, so grind beyond your gear and you can't kill enemies fast enough to prevent them from wrecking your shit. The other side of this is that you have to grind enough to have the health pool you need to not die in one hit.
It's about balance.

No the thing is that your characters level up their stats and skills by doing shit
if you grind easy monsters and kill them fast your battle rank will increase but your characters will be shit
