I can't honestly think of a worse JRPG plot than Star Ocean 4.
First it starts out with the objective of seeking a new habitable planet for Earthlings, then suddenly the main characters are sucked into past Earth and Edge thinks it'll surely be a great idea to give the generator of supreme death and destruction to these crazy scientists of the past era hiding in Area Fucking 51, blowing the planet up, but not affecting future Earth because "lol alternate timeline" and not affecting the main plot in the slightest apart from Edge moping around for a while until the power friendship saves him from his emo phase. Then there's aliens seeking death and destruction of everything,the elf fucboi "dies" against them in a cutscene and suddenly he's the final boss of the game because he saw a side character die and got angrybecause nothing can make any sense and there can't be any sort of consistency in this game. At the end of the game the aliens are stopped, but Earth problem is still relevant and no one seems to mind and everyone lives happily ever after.

In fact, that's what the whole game is about. What can he do? Does he follow his Father's wishes or does he follow his own ambitions?
He learns that he can't act of his own will selfishly, because this leads to his Father's demise.
He learns he can't just go "Haha sorry about that I'll lead Lhant now like my father wanted me to" because Hubert shows up and duels him for the lordship of Lhant and wins.
He realizes that he's a fucking joke and breaks down in the middle of the rain in front of a previously dead childhood friend and makes the decision to help out those he can help and are willing to receive his help, which is Richard.
And of course we all realize where this goes.
If not for Ludger, Asbel would be the most shit on protagonist in the first five hours of his own game.

And I don't just mean as a main character, as a whole character, side character, offscreen, whatever the fuck you wanna call it, he was utter trash.
And also, don't give me that BS about him not being the main character and that Basch really was or that it was Balthier and Fran. Give me a fucking break, you start off as him, you play as him and you save Ashe as him.

He was dead out the door, nobody could have filled Caim's shoes, but it was made doubly noticeable because he was not a good MC to begin with. Everything about the second game was a downgrade from the first, from the characters to the story. A lot of the problems in the game, particularly the second and third playthroughs, would have been solved if he had just been willing to give his cousin a dick to calm her dumb ass down. I think she was only second or third cousin anyway, not even that big of a deal.

I view him as a plot point; he was important. At the beginning. He did his job, saved the princess, then should have just faded into obscurity while the actual adults handled the rest. Instead, for god knows why, they took him along with them. I is technically the main character because he was definitely written to be the main character, but from every other aspect of the story, he was only important at the very beginning, the rest of the time he was just on the sidelines.

I could listen to his inner monologues all day. Tidus was a great protagonist in FFX in battle and in the story.
What most people don't seem to take into account was that his Dad was insanely rich and loaded and he grew up in a pampered lifestyle with a neglectful mother that literally died when her husband left her and a tough love father that wasn't around long enough for Tidus to realize that it was indeed tough love.
To add onto this, he himself became a star athlete which furthered his pampered lifestyle, so of course he's a little whiny.
But that all changes. He becomes more serious, but he doesn't become edgy. He still keeps his playful attitude and doesn't mope around. Even when he figures out that he's a dream, he puts that shit off for later because he's got a world to save.
Of course he's going to be a little bitchy when he figures out his Dad is the reason for all these people dying, all the destruction in Spira and the inevitability that he has to kill him. In fact, that was a very realistic and character changing moment for him when he says to Auron, "You say I have a choice but I don't, do I?"
Because he knows he has a duty. He knows he has a job to do but just didn't want to go up against his father, because even though he thought his Dad was just an ass, it was still his dad.
In fact, Tidus even realizes it for himself that it was tough love because of those recording spheres Jecht left behind, which makes it all the more hard for him.
We don't talk about what happens afterward.
And of course, you can't say any of this for Vaan.
