The people who did make the games complained about the 'suda51 game' treatment shortly thereafter because suda is too busy being a ceo to even touch games. I don't know, it felt pretty finished. Great ending, fast pacing, the only shitty levels are the story ones.

I know. That's what upsets me. Bergamo had a nice style and KiD was fun, so it would have probably been a game I quite liked. Instead we get LiD. It's a waste of a studio and a disappointment. It'll bomb too, so a financial waste that'll probably hurt if not kill the devs on top of it.

But, anon, it's a legacy. They couldn't finish Fallout and went off to found Troika, they couldn't finish VtM:B and Arcanum because of every other complication other than themselves and after getting killed by goddam Bethesda who stole Fallout 3 from them, some of the folks from Troika found Obsidian. Then they couldn't finish Alpha Protocol because of SEGA, New Vegas because of Bethesda(goddammit Bethesda, stop bullying same people again and again) and KOTOR 2 because of Bioware.

Part of me honestly wishes that Gung-Ho dismantles Grasshopper so that Suda has an excuse to leave and can hopefully move onto directing Japanese indie games without just trying to recreate his cult hits.

Just look at the credits for his games. The last game he directed was NMH1. He's had some involvement with his games since then, usually in terms of writing the stories, but even then, a lot of that still gets cut. He was originally going to direct Shadows of the Damned, making it a Kafka-esque nightmare, but the game was plagued with so much development hell that he stepped down. He went through five different revisions of the game, each being shot down by EA for being too weird, until eventually they went with the direction of the finalized game, with a different director entirely and Mikami's consultancy.

I just got the Grasshopper company art book (it actually has English text in it, and from what I can tell, it's translated well), so I'm hoping to read up on more stuff about the company history. Only problem is that it gives higher precedence to the more prolific games and reduces some games like Contact to a single footnote (it doesn't even have any art). Plus, I doubt we'll ever get any real dirt on what's actually going on with Grasshopper, as I imagine that'd throw a few other companies under the bus.

I know that, I was talking about the unhappy employees. And the soaps are apparently holiday gifts, as per my Google search, it looks like CheapyD from Cheap Ass Gamer knows people who worked at Grasshopper and told him the guy was a complete asshole.

I just wish Suda went full independent again, Silver Case was fucking nuts and honestly WAY ahead of its time. A game like that would absolutely crush "alt games" from western indies.

Yeah, I just looked it up. Apparently that all came from CheapyD, who actually lived in Japan for years and ran with a lot of the same circles Grasshopper did. He doubled down on stating that Suda is a jerk, saying that at least four employees have told him as much. I don't WANT to believe it, but if anyone would be in a position to know and not fear or be beholden to inter- or intra-company politics, it'd be him.

It pains me that so many early Grasshopper/Human Entertainment/Spike games are still untranslated. I'm learning Japanese right now for business, and if, in a couple of years, they're not translated by the time I have a good level of competency, I'll be tempted to find a ROM hacker and translate them myself.

Pretty much any of the Souls games, really.

I'd say of all the Souls games, Dark Souls 2 is the most incomplete, as it went through one hell of an awful development process and switched directors halfway through and all that drama that's in the design works art book.

Bloodborne is probably the closest thing there is to a complete Souls game, with the most glaring incomplete aspect being the half-baked Chalice Dungeons.

There's a bunch of tidbits on the GhM anniversary artbook that came out early this year. It's written in english and should be avaiable on your local amazon for cheap.

Taking for example KiD, the gigolo stuff was requested by the publisher (Kadowaka) in order to raise sales.

Another NMH sequel would only continue the trend of creative bankruptcy they are currently in.

They need to move away from the beat'em'up template and go back to experiemental/non sensical games like they used to.
Even with mediocre results (eg Michigan) at least it was something unique and with potential.
