After the original dev ran with the money and after the NYC dev group Hussie made fell through, Hiveswap (the Homestuck game), somehow still exists, a lifeless corpse of what could have been. It's frankly astounding it even still exists at all considering any other person would've given up by now
So what started out as a 2.5 million dollar game that was handed to a seasoned and supposedly trustworthy dev (who ran with the money to make king's quest), has gone through so much development hell that it's been reduced to flash game
what happened to the new dev group?
poor hussie, dude is going to end up bankrupting himself to get this game made if he's not careful.
And before anyone says >2.5 million dollars
None of that kickstarter money went to this game. Half of it was taken by the odd gentleman and the rest of it was squandered on the dev team that made the 3D version showcased earlier.
What you see here is the result of that entire thing being scrapped and them starting from square one out of pocket
Kickstarter, not even once.
Why didn't they just stick with 2D sprites like they did with the walkaround minigames in Homestuck? I mean they even got Toby Fox making the soundtrack, he could've helped with that from his experience with Undertale

I mean, Kickstarter can be good. But the fact that they did a Kickstarter for a game that had absolutely no proof of concept in any form was a big red flag. The video for it was just a compilation of pre-existing animations. Didn't bode well for the final product.

When Hussie first announced it, he made it seem like it was just something he did on a whim, on impulse, not even expecting it to be funded, then when it did he realized he had to get his shit together.
The comic is so fucking meta and fucked over that the Kickstarter money will become a plot point and people will tolerate it.

Hiveswap is a perfect example of mismanaging a kickstarter that every indie dev wanting to make a game should look to for what not to do.
First of all, he gave a chunk of money from the get go with hardly a contract to some dev and said "here, make games happen", and then when they stole the money, he made his own dev studio but still kept the ambitious 3d graphics and expected a handful of amateurs to be able to finish the game at a reasonable time frame
If he were smart he would've done this from the get go:

Toby had a TON of experience with spriting and 2d RPGs from years of making hacks and small projects and only even put up a kickstarter after he got a demo out. Why the fuck isn't he counseling Hussie on how to make a game considering he's a part of the dev team?

Kickstarters are best for board games imo, and even then expect MASSIVE delays, but you'll usually at least get your game. Video game Kickstarters are only good if the creator has a demo or a RECENT proven track record.

RPGs are too hard for most homestuck fans to understand. At least with PnC games, you don't have to worry about such triggering things as HP and EXP. Hussie truly knows his fanbase.

as a narrative piece homestuck is a mix of RPG, parser-based fiction, point and click adventure, with a heaping portion of The Sims, and probably more I'm forgetting. Going the route of point and click adventure made sense because those kinds of games are generally simple to make (not in this case though!) and it's kind of a middle-ground among all the different game styles.

Reading a summary or going through tvtropes is about as long as Homestuck itself so you're better off just reading the thing legit so you can at least see neat animations and read funny conversations sometimes.

Homestuck is what one would classify as a tumblr fad. Legitimate homestuck fans stayed, sure, but the overwhelming majority of Homestuck fans never were and never will be Homestuck fans. Just kids who are "fandom fans", they grasp onto whatever's popular on tumblr at the moment and be as obnoxious about it as humanly possible, then when it dies down ignore it like the plague and act disgusted when it's brought up again. Homestuck was never really popular. Just like Undertale isn't really popular now. Tumblrs will abandon it like the disgusting scavengers they are, feasting off of poor niche communities until they're a festering pile of shit and then moving onto the next big thing.

The majority of Homestuck fans are FotM types who moved on after a month or three.
A lot simply dispersed into the seasonal anime department and Steven Universe. Some stuck around for Undertale.

Homestuck/Undertale is what happens when you don't quarantine the problem.

I've worked pretty closely with him for most of Homestuck's duration, and it's been rewarding to see his skills develop over that time until he was ready to make such a strong creative statement of his own. I will have to consider his game one of the better legacies of Homestuck, as well as my basement. (Actually, yes, he literally spent a period of time developing Undertale in my basement. I have always assumed this is why he titled the game as such.) If you haven't played it yet, I strongly recommend you check it out!

well that's, interesting. not sure what to think about this. the given example is GARBAGE, but it could easily just be a bad example? given the great artists they do surely have. i was never a fan of the 3D graphics, the environments were nice but the character models and animations were terrible. and that's what troubles me about this one, the character sprite is still fucky. very low quality animation and still a weird not-quite-homestuck style.
