I WANT OFF MR. NEWELL'S WILD RIDE

>what's happening?
something fuckery is happening with steam. You get logged into random people's account

>why is that bad?
you can see private email, transaction history, payment history

>am I fugged?
no we're all gonna be rich after suing gabe for literally billion of dollars.

Whole thing reminds me of this same type of issue happening for me once on Twitch.

I was logged in as some random guy, I couldn't really do anything with it but I was able to see his PM inbox on twitch. Found didn't find much aside from this myspace-tier chatlog between him and (presumably) a girl, just really awful cybering. I couldn't even bring myself to screencap it for future lulz, it was just so bad.
>>
Well, I went to go watch a movie with my gf. I come back to see a 6000 post sticky, and this shit. I check my store transactions, my online banking info, and everything still seems fine.

So either I got lucky and dodge a bullet, or nothing actually happened besides a bunch of people photoshopping fake screenshots to spook people.

Okay there is a lot of misinformation/confusion in this thread. This is the situation, as I understand it.
PEOPLE ARE NOT ACTUALLY 'LOGGING' INTO YOUR ACCOUNT.
IT IS A CACHING ERROR MAKING PEOPLE SEE PAGES THAT THEY SHOULD NOT BE SEEING.
AT NO POINT DOES ANYONE LOG INTO YOUR ACCOUNT BECAUSE OF THIS BREACH, UNLESS THEY SOMEHOW GLEAM THE INFO FROM AN ACCOUNT PAGE THEY RANDOMLY VIEW.
>>
So now that we know that credit cards were not charged, we're people who had paypal set up for auto authentication charged?

Imagine the buttblast PCancer who took the time out of his day to slap this image together. Absolutely pathetic and just further illustrates how badly PC containment board is needed.

This is a Sony board first and foremost. We let the Nintenbros post, but we're not tolerating PC shitters anymore.

I personally guarantee a PC containment board by March 2016.

It doesn’t appear that credit card information is being displayed or that unauthorised users can charge or take anything from accounts. It is still serious as all user information should be deemed sensative. Information that can be seen includes:

Balance
Connected Credit card number last 2* digits
Steam account username
Community profile
Email connected to the account
Steam guard on/off
Email of the paypal account
Last 4 digits of phone number
Country
Family shared connected accounts/devices
Purchase history

Wow, some random faggot out there might, maybe, potentially could have, by mere chance and without any intent, ended up seeing a cached page with my fucking email address on it at some point over the span of less than an hour.

That's totally worse than my credit card and password getting deliberately stolen by an organized group with stated malicious intent and the service from which these were stolen being inaccessible to literally everyone continuously for months.

Do you realize how retarded you sound? Don't get me wrong, Valve should never have allowed this to happened, but the reality is that this fuck-up only really, tangibly effects the incredibly fucking microscopic minority of people who SIMULTANEOUSLY stored a significant amount of sensitive information on their Steam account AND happened, by the purest chance, to have their page randomly viewed by someone with malicious intent. This is not even close to equivalent to the PSN hack.

Jewel cases are probably the most shitastic storage method ever designed by human beings. So fucking flimsy.
Second worst are DVD cases. So much fucking dead shelf space just to store 1 disc.
And then there's the fact that you actually have to get off your ass to physically find and get the disc and then fiddle around with them when swapping them around.
And if anyone else ever got to your collection the discs were all over the fucking place, none of them in their own cases, they'd be full of scratches and dents because Discs are the least normie proof data storage method ever deviced.
With digital everything is neatly in their folders and a mere double click away.
The spinning disc load times were shit too.
Now with SSDs THERE ARE NO FUCKING LOAD TIMES.

Discs...

by requesting a cached page, it becomes available. since the problem is people are seeing other people caches, each time you click store and request a cache, it gets lost in the big mess of caching.

so it dosent matter if you view or delete or refresh the page, its requesting a cache. which might go to someone elses. its hardly a big deal, unless you really worry about someone getting your email, or calling you if your numbers there

Probably not at all. No evidence has been presented that people were actually able to gain access to the accounts of others. You could see the last few digits of CCs and email addresses, but that's it.

Also, this has happened in the past, usually when Valve gets a giant amount of people crapping up there servers.

"Steam is back up and running without any known issues," a Valve spokesperson told GameSpot. "As a result of a configuration change earlier today, a caching issue allowed some users to randomly see pages generated for other users for a period of less than an hour. This issue has since been resolved. We believe no unauthorized actions were allowed on accounts beyond the viewing of cached page information and no additional action is required by users."

You know that bug on 4chan when 2 people post images at the same time and thumbnails get mixed up?
Think of it like that. Only instead of 2 different posted images being given the same thumbnail, it's 2 different users' page requests.
>but authenticators!!!!
Your posts also have authentication. They require you solve a captcha that's unique to you in order for the post to go through. Despite the fact that the captcha was unique to you, that image data still fucks up and gets sent to all the other users incorrectly.

It doesn't matter that your captcha or authenticator or whatever else verified your initial request to send and receive the information if individual pages are getting confused with other individual pages. The wrong page gets sent to the wrong person.

The funny thing is, I'm a PCfat but I've always had a soft spot for Sony. The PS1 and 2 were GOAT, the PS3 really turned around at the end of the last gen. And overall the PS4 is fucking up the least this gen.

But I can't talk about any of that because Sony Ponies just want to shitfling and show how much better they are than PCfats. Even in their own threads.

They blatantly falseflag their own threads on PS4 vidya all two of them to derail themselves and start a shitflinging contest between Sony Ponies and Sony Ponies pretending to be PCfats.

Clearly you dont remember the 10 other times steam accounts got compromised, or the time on the MW2 launch where a fraction of players got VAC banned wrongly due to the game having two .exe's it swapped between, and they didnt undo the bans.

In your analogy the doors would reveal someone else's home each time they were opened, but you wouldn't be able to cross the threshold. Same applies to everyone else with a door.

Identity theft only requires someone to copy down what they see. If they could figure out anything related to the root of the issue and reproduce it, they could automate it and get tons and tons of users account information just from those cached pages
>>
>>321486000

Did you see someone else's full name, billing address, or phone number? Seems like the email address was the only one of those things that was revealed in full. Last two of the CC, last four of the phone.

Look at this pleb assuming Steam is immune to laws out there.
If Steam is at fault for my losses, they'll be paying the price for it. They wouldn't be getting away with it for jack free.

Probably. Who knows. If it was just cached pages being sent to the wrong users, the worst they could have access to is your email address, full name, and if you had steam store them the last 4 digits of your credit card and phone number and your address.

That's a lot of personal information but there isn't a whole lot someone could do with it that you couldn't have resolved within a couple weeks if something serious actually happens because of it.

Don't be fucking retarded

Even if you don't explicitely allow Steam to remember any of that stuff, the data still exists on Steam's end. And therefore, Steam fucking up like this means ALL such data (even data that wasn't supposed to be "remembered") is at risk.

Also, it's not just about today's issue. It's also about Valve, and all other IT giants in general who dispose of huge amounts of highly confidential data, being so fucking careless and downright incompetent (dangerously slow). This is just the latest incident in a growing trend of these IT giants fucking up majorly, putting millions of people at risk, and receiving NO FUCKING BACKLASH over it. It's an absurd situation, and yet it just keeps happening. Eventually something's going to have to give.

just reset it to a random string of characters and keep doing it every few days until you're confident

Also, if this whole situation has you up in arms about your internet security, get an open source program like keepass or passwordgorilla that gives you the security of completely individual and randomized passwords for every account you have, but the ability access all your shit with 1 password like almost everyone actually does even though they shouldn't

For about an hour earlier today, users were being sent other users' account pages. That means, if you were logged today around the time it happened, any random steam user could have had access to:
>our account name
>your steam wallet balance
>your email
>the country you live in
>the last 2 digits of your credit card number if you had it saved
>the last 4 digits of your phone number if you had it saved
>whether or not your account is protected by steam guard
>if you have any other accounts set up for the family sharing thing
And you'd have no idea who or how many people had access to it.

It's fixed now, but change your password to something hard to crack.

Steam showed peoples Billing Addresses, the last 4 CC numbers, and some other info to random people due to a Cache error. It's all fixed and you could NOT have lost money from this.

You know what I hate the most? Whenever there's a major security fuckup (I know today wasn't really a big deal by any means, but still, I'm talking more generally), the companies that are at fault for being so fucking incompetent always end up simply shrugging it off and facing no serious backlash.

Imagine if Valve really had fucked up to the point where people could steal CC info. Would anything have changed? Absolutely not. In this hypothetical scenario, despite having put MILLIONS of people at risk (which is fucking insane), Valve would have just gone "ehh...oops, I guess", shrugged it off and moved on (and maybe given us some retarded compensation, like a free TF2 hat or some other fucking retarded "compensation" of that nature), and faced no real consequences (at least, not the level of consequences that they SHOULD be facing).

I really wish companies were seriously held accountable (i.e. CRIMINALLY responsible) for any kind of IT retardery that leads to people falling victim to credit card theft, identity theft, etc. This current system of having the confidential information of hundreds of millions (or even billions) of people all rest in the hands of the incompetent IT departments of companies who literally don't give a rat's ass, and who risk essentially nothing from fucking up with all of this sensitive information, is simply absurd. Realistically, it cannot go on. Something NEEDS to be done eventually. Either that or in 10 years suddenly people will wake up and find out that Amazon (just as an example) has been hacked and every single credit card, paypal account, etc. along with all associated information, has been completely compromised, everybody will be in a fucking disarray, and what will be Amazon's response? "Oops".
>>
>>321491240
>recover
You didn't lose anything, other people might have just found out some sensitive information.

Nobody was given your password or anything, I'm saying to change your password for your steam account and associated email as a precaution, especially if you use something simple like "randomword1999!".

lol what a bunch of pathetic asswipes you all are

This is nothing, it's not like a massive amount of info ended up in the hands of people looking to steal identities. With the Sony hack I'm sure you sonyfags data all ended up online somewhere but the most of us are fine

>>
>>321495320
>pcfags this mad all of their personal information is out and avaliable
>>
>>321485931
The problem is that info leaked.

Full names, addresses, emails (when you try to edit card info, it sent you to a cache of a random steam user).

That's the biggest issue with what happened during the Sony problem. People lost their personal info. Their purchasing data was encrypted, but having the last 4 digs of any card and personal info leaked makes it extremely easy for snoopers to use that information for customer service to find the rest of your info.

Are people this ignorant or are people purposely blinding themselves because PCMUSTARDRACE or massive valve drones. This kind of situation is never ok, especially when one one even hacked them and they released a ton of info.

Origin offers refunds if you don't like a game after a week, or 24 hours after you first play the game, Valve only offers refunds because of Origin's pressure.

Valve is the shittiest and most incompetent game making company of all time.

This is why it's important to study economics. They don't teach you that in highschool. It's a fucking shame how retarded people are about finances.

There's been conflicting reports, but all that's confirmed (AFAIK) with regard to CC info was that PARTIAL numbers (meaning, I assume, the last 4 digits) were visible IF you had a card stored in the system.

It's a community mod. They're like the old MVP of WoW forums, they get selected to the position for being helpful (or sucking up to Valve) long enough for a position to open and them to get selected for it.

They don't actually have anything to do with Valve.

>>321500378
It's probably a generic function that just converts a timestamp to a human-readable form, not built specifically for that message.
>>
>>321501982
Not at all. What happened is that people received pages that were meant for someone else. If you sent no requests for pages your info wasn't sent to anyone.
>>
So, how is this a threat aside from a privacy standpoint? Can anyone fill me in? I went ahead and disabled the card that was saved on my account to be safe, but it seems that the primary thing was a visual but no real ability over the account. I think if anything this seems to be a privacy breach and I will never make a purchase with my card directly through steam again.

ITT people that never got their shit stolen via Paypal.

Protip: The worst that can happen is that someone buys you videogames on your account. They can't directly log into your account.

And even if they did and started withdrawing money from your account it goes into a "pending" status and Paypal usually tells you that you made withdraw from your account which you can cancel since Paypal usually waits before they withdraw money directly especially when it's more than 2$
>>
>>321502467
