You know what I hate the most? Whenever there's a major security fuckup (I know today wasn't really a big deal by any means, but still, I'm talking more generally), the companies that are at fault for being so fucking incompetent always end up simply shrugging it off and facing no serious backlash.
Imagine if Valve really had fucked up to the point where people could steal CC info. Would anything have changed? Absolutely not. In this hypothetical scenario, despite having put MILLIONS of people at risk (which is fucking insane), Valve would have just gone "ehh...oops, I guess", shrugged it off and moved on (and maybe given us some retarded compensation, like a free TF2 hat or some other fucking retarded "compensation" of that nature), and faced no real consequences (at least, not the level of consequences that they SHOULD be facing).
I really wish companies were seriously held accountable (i.e. CRIMINALLY responsible) for any kind of IT retardery that leads to people falling victim to credit card theft, identity theft, etc. This current system of having the confidential information of hundreds of millions (or even billions) of people all rest in the hands of the incompetent IT departments of companies who literally don't give a rat's ass, and who risk essentially nothing from fucking up with all of this sensitive information, is simply absurd. Realistically, it cannot go on. Something NEEDS to be done eventually. Either that or in 10 years suddenly people will wake up and find out that Amazon (just as an example) has been hacked and every single credit card, paypal account, etc. along with all associated information, has been completely compromised, everybody will be in a fucking disarray, and what will be Amazon's response? The problem is that info leaked.
Full names, addresses, emails (when you try to edit card info, it sent you to a cache of a random steam user).
That's the biggest issue with what happened during the Sony problem. People lost their personal info. Their purchasing data was encrypted, but having the last 4 digs of any card and personal info leaked makes it extremely easy for snoopers to use that information for customer service to find the rest of your info.
Are people this ignorant or are people purposely blinding themselves because PCMUSTARDRACE or massive valve drones. This kind of situation is never ok, especially when one one even hacked them and they released a ton of info.

So, how is this a threat aside from a privacy standpoint? Can anyone fill me in? I went ahead and disabled the card that was saved on my account to be safe, but it seems that the primary thing was a visual but no real ability over the account. I think if anything this seems to be a privacy breach and I will never make a purchase with my card directly through steam again.

And even if they did and started withdrawing money from your account it goes into a "pending" status and Paypal usually tells you that you made withdraw from your account which you can cancel since Paypal usually waits before they withdraw money directly especially when it's more than 2$
