There was a caching issue with the service they use (or how they set it up) which allowed people to view other people's account details.

You couldn't actually modify anything or make purchases, but Viscant's persona is being a pure boy so he's poking fun at it in his own way.

This is all a ruse to get people paranoid over account stealing and to sign their phone number over to the Mobile Authenticator so Valve can sell the numbers to ad agencies.

There's a reason Valve chose not to give generic authenticators that could be used on any iOS/Android device like every other game and service with 2-step authentication offers and instead opted to force everyone to use a mobile phone only version, and then went and tossed paypal market lockout periods, trading lock out periods, 24 hour holds to trade, etc. to those who don't use it.

To punish people repeatedly for not giving their lucrative phone number over until they give in and sign up into Valves scheme.

Services like steam don't go down (in a long sense), they have too much on them. Companies go bankrupt, pretty sure banks have get involved instead. Other companies buy them to get the market share and maintain the service. If you are talking about not being able to access your games during maintenance then that's the thing we all knew all along

No. They have no way of knowing from inside.

Look up "Tom Scott Google Doesn't Know Your Password" on youtube if you need a simplified explanation if you aren't very tech knowledgeable.

No, they can only view superficial information about your account. Your name, your address, your phone number, the last four digits of your credit card if you have it added to your account. Couple this with the fact that there are millions of Steam users and the likeliness of someone seeing your info is very small, and the chances of someone with malicious intent seeing it are even smaller.

Still pretty fucked up though.

To be honest. The idea of them seeing my name and address is pretty scary. I don't really care if they can see stuff linked to my "virtual life". It's the IRL stuff that I find freaky.
>>
>>321444717

This.

These kind of hacks (this, PSN the other year, XBL last year I think) aren't really that dangerous to the end user in general (unless the breach is very malicious from the start, more likely to happen with the comapny as the target. See: Sony hack this year)

The fiasco that happens after these is usually not about the safety of the users at the moment, it's more about emphasizing the poor security the system had in the first place.

Your name is completely irrelevant, thousands of people in your life will know it. Unless your name is Adewalizo McTalefar-Jokzlan, your name is hardly enough to identify you from the crowd.

To be fair. I have a pretty unique name. Probably less than 20 people in the world have it.
But that is irrelevant since they also have my address.

>>321445725
Most of the "damaging" stuff probably requires your ID.

You need to give government ID to prove identity AND give your bank number so the account owner can checked and verified as you.
