OP, ideally you want something that looks good even at a very small size. Many parts of Steam, including the chat, show it as a 32x32 avatar.
Since the last thing you want is a "what the fuck is that supposed to be" pic, logos and close-ups of faces (especially anime/cartoons) tend to work well. They're very recognizable even as a tiny picture.
Just don't be that faggot who picks a reaction image that's obviously from 4chan.
