Buy a mayflash v2 for $55, then a sanwa JLF stick for $25, and some sanwa buttons (optional, but recommended) for $20
This is absolutely the cheapest way to get a full sanwa stick without building your own case.
And if you ever need ps4/xbone support it's super easy to swap in a new pcb.
I use a Hrap4, I like it but there is very little palm room.

For PS4 aside from pad-modding I'd advise going TE2 if you want it hassle-free, otherwise get that cheap Venom Mayflash knock-off and change parts to Sanwa/Seimitsu (should total around 120€).

an educated purchase with those criteria in mind should also consider input latency of the PCB itself, which is blatantly unnecessary and just a lazy design flaw if present.
If your stick works for you, congratulations, in the end it all comes down to the parts, which all in all mostly amount to around 50$, and then the case + PCB and wiring.
No matter which route you try to take, you'll almost always end up at or slightly above 100$, which is why I listed the Venom Mayflash clone as a cheap alternative in my original post.

Has anyone a lot of experience with Hori's Hayabusa and Kuro parts? From what I gather, generally people seem to say that they're not much better or worse than Sanwa parts, just different. I think my problem is I don't like things that are different. But they're like $50 less than the new TEs because Madcatz thinks they have 100% share of the market. When is Qanba going to come out with something.

I can't really imagine the buttons having more resistance than anything. The actuation force is so light and the distance so short that it really threw me off the first time I tried using them. I'd accidentally press buttons by resting my fingers on the buttons.

How is +R actually better aside from having more characters? R feels stiff as fuck and has so many unneeded mechanics that just serve the purpose of making the game harder to play, but not actually any deeper.

+R gave the player more options when playing the game. Xrd removed a lot of these options. Many characters had more things they could do compared to Xrd, such as I-no being able to choose between two note speeds, and having a double air dash, or Eddie having two little Eddie movesets to choose from. Force breaks were great, giving you something to do with your meter besides frcs and the occasional reversal super.
Matches are much more fast paced than Xrd, in the movespeeds of the characters, and the fact that roman cancels don't let the players slow down time.
And yes, it has a better cast of characters (at least until Xrd catches up).
The only thing Xrd did better (in my opinion) is changing slash backs to the blitz shield. It's much easier to use, and therefore actually sees some use.
If you like Xrd better that's fine, but I think +R is the overall better game.
A few years ago I bought a WWE Brawlstick from Madkatz and swapped the stick and buttons for Sanwa parts. I think after all these years it may have cost a total of like $65 and it still works fucking great.
So you don't have to get too expensive, especially with the starter stick. You dont need a $200 TE2 stick, but try to pay attention to reviews because they are generally on point.
I just splurged and got myself a TE2 for christmas, and since it's my first stick it felt really weird, but I think it might also be because it has a square gate. Is that standard? Are octagonal gates expensive and will it be easy to swap out?

square gates are the standard. I would say give it some more time to see if you can get used to it, so you can avoid the hassle of swapping it out.
Since it's your first stick, it will feel weird regardless. Give it a couple weeks/a month, and see how it feels then.
