DK is more iconic to the general public.
Link is probably more well liked by those within gaming, though.

DK's got his name on one of the most influential and successful arcade games and as good as ALttP was the DKC trilogy was ridiculously popular. Only during the N64 and GCN Era did Link usurp DK but with no new Zelda in sight and DK in Retro's hands the ape's back on top.

DK will always be in Mario's shadow as a side character though, regardless of how popular his games are, which is a burden Link doesn't have to bear.
