When movies get remade critics shit all over it as do most people that enjoyed the original. Video games however get a pass. These days it seems to even be preferred with how terrible the modern gamer is at old games. Instead these people prefer to say the game is "aged poorly" when in reality they just suck at games.

Same reason TFA is so similar to the OT. You're just rebranding shit for a new audience. All of the LP's kids of this new generation have certainly heard of FFVII but sure as hell have never played it. This is for them and for every FF fan that has stuck around. SE must be in serious problems if they're pulling the remake card this early.
For the OP, I don't mind remakes. Games age like milk graphically (except for the rare 2D game with godly art direction). Though those also age since resolutions have increased so much over the years. As long as all the "programming" stays the same I would buy a graphical revamp, a bad example would be the Homeworld remake (where they butchered the first game since they changed engines). Ideally new areas or content should be added, specially since most games have cut content.

On consoles - yes, because you can't play old games on new consoles, you need special edition for it.
On PC - only if the game never actually released on it in the first place and can't be emulated, otherwise old version (if game was good) probably not only still works, it has shitton of mods, so you can play it today on your rig without gouging your eyes out.tfw replaying Gothic 2 + Ex + graphic mods
