I don't exactly know what is considered Grand Strategy Would Civ5 count as one?

If you have never played a grand strategy get EU 4, the learning curve is smaller compared to Vicky 2
>>
Crusader Kings 2
Europa Universalis 4
Victoria 2
Hearts of Iron 3

Those are the big four Paradox Grand Strategy games ranked in order of easiest to hardest to get into for newcomers. Personally I like EU the most. Also no Civilization is a 4X game. I can't be bothered to explain the differences so go look it up if you really want to know.

Interesting, here's another question regarding visuals, which looks nicer/feel better/sound better?
>>
>>321260458
Europa 4 in general looks better and has more visual mods, Vicky 2 is older but it does have its own aesthetic to it
>>
>>321260458

EU4 because it's the newest game and uses the newest version of their game engine.
>>
eu4 is a pretty easy entry point, but it's also not that great. it's best to play it first because you'll get annoyed with it after playing other paradox games

I personally find crusader kings 2 a lot more enjoyable as far as the more casual paradox gs games go

victoria 2 is cool, but it's quite difficult to get into and actually know what you're doing. it's really rewarding if you stick with it though

hearts of iron is too much for me

ck2 has my favorite map mod, but there are some good ones for eu4 as well. victoria 2 was my first paradox game, and I had no idea what I was doing despite putting 20 hours into it. I put about 80 hours into eu4 before getting board of it and then I shifted over to ck2 which I'm still playing

with all paradox games I suggest buying whatever bundle is on a nice sale and then pirating any dlc that's not included. they're massive jews when it comes to dlc and it's easy as pie to pirate

you can buy EU4 in steam (or just pirate it) and then download the DLC from the general in /vg/
>>

Europa Universalis has a fucking ugly ass 3D map, even mods can't make it as nice as Vicky's
Vicky will give you way more entertainment once you get the hang of it, as EU4 is incredibly shallow.

I can say that the V2 map does have a certain charm to it.

>>321260904
>>321261124
Yea, I would most probably end up getting no DLC for EUiv because thats shits too much.

I will say this, without shame, I'm most inclined to get V2 just because of the game's box art
>>
>>321261923
keep in mind, that EU4 starts in the XV century to 1836 (aprox) and vicky2 spans from 1836 to 1936
>>
>>321262106
Hmm... That is a great concern, makes it all the more difficult to choose between the two.
>>
>>321262712
well the games are each like 500mb or something like that, so you could easily pirate them and play the tutorial + a few hours of each and see what you like the most
>>
>>321261923
make sure to get the 2 expansions ("A House Divided" and "Heart of Darkness") for Victoria 2
>>
>>321262712
I guess it boils down to what historical period is more interesting for you. Although you get only 100 years from V2, shorter playthoughs means that you can play more times before you get bored

>Would Civ5 count as one?
no Civ5 is a 4x, and a TBS.
>>
Eu4 is easier to learn, but is very expensive

Vic 2 is more complex and much cheaper

I feel like EU4 probably has more content overall, since most of my vic 2 games tend to be pretty similar and the larger nations are so powerful they basically autopilot.

It's mostly about which era you prefer imo.

Eu4 suffers from some weird abstractions like mana, which is a fun game mechanic, but it takes away more than the money investing in eu3 did.
Eu4 is very much a game first and a historical sim second.

Consider playing Eu3:HTTT or Eu3:DW if you prefer the era of Eu4 over V2, but if you don't enjoy the mechanics of Eu4.

Eu3 is 1399-1821, Eu4 is I think 1444-1821 while V2 is 1836-1936 I think.

Here's a pic from a recent coop multiplayer game I had in eu4.
I started playing it because of vs multiplayer and has since then played some coop and single as well.
Spaniards arrived with a conquistador, explored a few of my provinces and then declear war on me.
I agreed to their demands very quickly, just war reps, some gold, 2 of my provinces. After they cored(fully incorporating a province to their nation) the provinces I could reform my religion and got 80% of their tech.

Before I had 2 military tech and they had 15 I think, I went up to 13.
Gained 26 free techs over all.

Castiles attitude for me went from Hostile to Threatened.
