As a speedrunner who's actually gone to AGDQ over the past few years, the biggest issue with the stream is that it's boring and held back by all these arbitrary rules. People can't just kick back, crack jokes, inform the audience about what's happening in the current run, and say whatever they want to, 'cause folks are easily offended, and losing the future 'donations' of one or two people is the most terrifying thing to the organizers. So the stream is now essentially sterilized and neutered, and as a result, is absolutely dreadful.
If you want fun at AGDQ, you actually have to be there. The atmosphere in the practice rooms and places where runners gather and shoot the shit is exactly what you'd want from the actual AGDQ stream. Frankly, it's the only reason to go anymore: to meet up with friends/fellow runners, bullshit for a few days, and then go back to our mediocre existences trying to milk Twitch and viewers for money to justify our out of control OCD.
Do yourselves a favor and just stop watching AGDQ/SGDQ. Spread the word. Let it die quietly. Other events will take its place eventually. Nothing's ever going to change, so best to let it die.

Speedrunner here, what you see on the actual twitch stream fucking sucks most of the time. Occasionally there's an interesting game, but most of the time it's the same old shit. They haven't even implemented all that many "no fun allowed" rules, it's just that the atmosphere has changed so much since earlier marathons, it's a lot more serious now.
All the cool shit happens off stream. Remember the bonus stream they used to do after the marathon and how fun that was? That's basically what happens off-stream 24/7. Almost every single person I know who goes to GDQs just says fuck the stream room, outside of a few runs, and only goes for the meetups.

You can at least speed up the TGM games, the guy who was running it even said that the game had some internal timer and that if he was playing at a certain speed since slowing down meant he couldn't qualify for GM or something. Stepmania is all autoscrolling as far as I know. I'm pretty sure you can even speed up shmups more by taking out bosses faster and trying not to tank the framerate.
