Its very difficult to track gaming PC numbers because most PCs will never play a game more demanding than Solitaire, and many PC gamers build their systems and pirate Windows which makes them difficult to track accurately.
Plus Microsoft actually doesn't want them to track PC numbers, because would prefer gamers go to the Xbox One where they get a cut of software sales, than the PC where they don't.
Maybe this will change in the future once PC gaming companies have more direct control over the fate of the PC as a gaming platform. For now we're still stuck with a console company holding it back.

I think the console as a Netflix machine trend came to an end ages ago with the advent of sub $50 streaming boxes.
Probably the best numbers we have for PC gaming are unique active users on Steam at 150 million, but even there the majority of accounts have barely any games with only about 1% of players having more than 100 games and that group of users doesn't resemble the general PC market very well.
