When you're playing as Mike and Sam and on your way to save Josh you can find Hannah's diary. If you read it then the Wendigo (which is Hannah) will kidnap Josh instead of killing him. You get a bonus epilogue at the end which shows Josh turning into a Wendigo and attacking some cops.

You need to give him the flare gun and not fire it until he gets attacked. That's literally the only purpose the gun has.
First run I lost Ashley, because I fell for the trapdoor option.
And Sam, because my controller vibrated during the "Hold "Still" QTE.
Wasn't a fan of how no one really seemed to notice their brutal deaths though.

Turns out the trick is to disagree with Emily when she says to head to the watch tower. That way, when he gets the flare gun he won't fire it, which will allow him to survive the wendigo attack.

I didn't realize that nobody could die until the end, so I thought I was playing through extremely well. Everybody was alive until the last half hour. Josh got his head popped, and then I blew up the house and killed like four others. It was a glorious failure but made the ending more memorable for me than it probably would have been otherwise.

The option for choosing is purposefully obscure. Moving the switch over to Ashley has the intercom state that you chose to save her. Moving the switch over to Josh has the intercom say that you chose to kill him.
No matter what, the sawblade will always head for Josh.
I watched a 100% every one lives play through. Lets be honest I rather watch a movie for free and watch some other guy choose the exact same choices I would have made instead of buying the game and getting side swiped by some bullshit quick time event.
