The TFA lightsaber battle had some sense impact. People getting wounded and branches and shit getting cut. Its totally unlike the overly choreographed Darth Maul fight. The best part of that fight was when they were in the shield hallway, using the environment in a neat way, but they go right back to the ballerina shit afterwards.

Yeah I know, but that's literally the only way I can see them redeeming the story in my eyes. Her falling to the dark side not only gives her more human qualities, but also sets us up for Poe + Finn teaming up to bring her back alongside watching her get beaten in a fight.

You're right, the tension was lacking but its not like the Darth Maul had that either. Two throwaway characters get killed and in the end its inconsequential.
But in terms of the fight itself, the choreography and flow of the battle was more impactful. Every lightsaber blow was stronger, even turning on the damn thing was more of an event thanks to the sound effects. In the prequels, the lightsabers are trivialized and the audience never gets a sense of their weight or gravity. Placing trees and branches around the battle arena was a great move.

Ren took a boltcaster shot to the gut, which the movie took several opportunities to show us how powerful it is, by sending Stormtroopers flying. If anything, it's amazing he's still standing at all.
Plus, we don't know what Rey's history is. For all we know, she's been trained by Luke too, and has just been memory wiped, with little things slipping through.
