2 is okay.

3 could have been better. In my opinion, universal ammo was a terrible idea.
>>
I thought EA turned a new leaf when they released 3 consecutive good games. Dead Space, Mirror's Edge, and Dragon Age. Then they became greedy and evil again.
>>
>>321116479
2 is okay it just kinda dropped the horror element and went full action game worth a playthrough, didn't play 3 and from all reports I never will.

I'd love to play this again but the shittiness of the port has finally superseded the enjoyability of the game for me.
>>
>>321116479
2 is better than 1 in many ways. 3 gets shit on for no reason. It's not as good as 1 or 2 but it's still a solid game. There's a couple of stupid moments where you fight human enemies from behind cover, but 98% of the game is like the last two.

2 is most similar to 1, but all three games are good. The advancements for DS3 were awesome, and the Ice Planet was extremely atmospheric. Fun as fuck.

They're called Necromorphs.
Xenomorphs are from the Alien series.
>>
>>321116857

I might have to give that a look and give it one last play through.
The whole mouse thing is the only thing wrong, as you've said, but it's completely unbearable.
>>
>>321116479
3 ditched the horror to make it more casual friendly. 2 doesn't get shit, yet in my opinion 1 is still the best overall experience.
>>
necromorphs were scary as fuck
>>
The reason Dead Space 1 was so good was because it was originally a Original Xbox game.

So pretty much when games were made with real heart

No.
>>
>>321116630
You serious? Universal ammo was extremely convenient.
>>
dead space 2 is a better game than 1 (though its much closer to resident evil 4 in terms of being a horror game than dead space 1 is)

dead space 3 is absolute turd and it upsets me that it exists
>>
>>321117673
>>321116630
Dead space 1 only gave you ammo of the weapons you had anyways
>>
>>321116479
2 was great, expanding the psychological part of the horror.
3 was alright. i got it on humble bundle with a friend. its fun. the charm of it is the coop mode. And i loved the alien relics at the end. the Lovecraft design was a good call.
Havent gotten the dlc, but i heard is bad
>>
>>321117192
>3>2

You have awful taste.I finished DS3 singleplayer AND the coop with a friend, it's just a terrible dead space game.

1>2>3
>>
I hated how isaac could talk in the second and third games, it would have been much better if he maybe said something a the very end of each game or just at the end of the last one. Also all of the 'drama' and relationships after the first game just feel tacked on, the series could have been so much more before it was streamlined into a shooter.

>Dead Space is dead
>>
>>321116479
2 is what you'd expect from a sequel. It's Dead Space 1, but more of it with some improvements. It sacrifices the sort of dread that the first game imposed with it's atmosphere.
Dead Space 3 is a very mixed bag, so naturally people will isolate it's negative qualities and ignore the rest. It has a fairly terrible narrative and introduces universal ammo. It ramps up the action aspects to being entirely too much at times. But, the setting and atmosphere are spot-on and the weapon crafting is at least interesting. Human enemies are few and far between and it always makes sense for them to be there. Side quests are very well done. Necromorphs lost their uniqueness and all end up just bumrushing you with little variation. It's not bad, but it does more wrong than the rest of the series.
>>
>>321116479
2 is very different from 1, but still a decent game. 3 has a terrible love-triangle story which seems really out of place for a Dead Space game. The ice planet is also pretty repetitive non-stop action which also feels totally wrong for a Dead Space game. The first half of DS3 is top-notch though, if only the whole game had been like that.
>>
>>321119329
the only thing I liked from 3 was fuzzy coat and the cannibal necros
>>
>>321114295
Oi check this 0.
>>
>>321118848
Yeah, I've been replaying DS1 recently, and Isaac not constantly making sarcastic breaking-4th-wall remarks like in 2 and 3 is so much better. DS1 has a god-tier atmosphere, and non-voiced protagonist really adds to that.
>>
>>321119329

>>321120472

>>
>>321116676
All of EAs good games were accidents

Dead Space was literally hidden from publishers until they had a demo they could brute force on them

Dragon Age was already halfway through development by the time EA acquired Bioware

not sure about Mirrors Edge
>>
>>321118217
the dlc is great though. it adds the horror of dead space 2 with the sudden insanity visions and the neo-unitology

2 is to 1 what Aliens is to Alien.

Good in it's own ways, even more enjoyable to some, depending on what you like. Kept some of the same elements, sacrificed others. Ultimately, in my opinion, not operating on the same level of greatness because of those sacrifices.

3 is Alien:Resurrection.

Fuck I loved Dead Space 2bh.

I hate that I can't play any dead space games beside 3 because with ds 1 i get headaches and drowsiness whenever I'm done playing and I already know DS2 by heart and where every enemy is gonna pop out because I did a hardcode run.

I literally only play 3 to get more new dead space content.
>>
>>321121654
I skipped 3 and played the Killing Floor mod. It just missed the necromorph screams and the high pitch EEEEEEE when you died. Spot on stuff..
>>
>>321117536
Damn I didn't know that, makes me wonder how the state of the series would be if it did release before the 360.
Probably would have been a lot more popular seeing as RE4 was huge back then, and the original Xbox didn't have much to compete with it.

2 wasnt nearly as viscerally terrifying as 1, but gets a lot tenser and is overall much better, occasional qtes aside, plus the unitology shit makes things much creepier and its harder to tell where enemies will come from

3 somehow lost all actual scares, and just shoves completely unsurprising jump scares after you by the dozens. the plot is really fucking meh, and they completely fucked up the music, making it all dramatic and cheesy. they got rid of any semblance of actual SURVIVAL horror with their universal ammo and gun crafting, and it just becomes a game of figure out what attachments work best, then pump all your stat boosters into it. i really didnt like 3 when it first came out, but ive grown to appreciate it a lot more
they did get rid of any raw horror, but they replaced it with more lovecraftian shit, the whole game practically feels like at the mountains of madness. and the further you get in the game and the more you learn, the more seriously fucked up the whole marker situation gets

You know what would have made 2's return to the Ishimura so much more intense and nerve wracking? They never show up to attack you the entire time you're on the ship. Granted 2 was more an action game, but goddamn they had something they could have abused the living shit out of for easy and overly tense moments.

Dead Space is one of those games that I just know I wont play in VR. Simply playing it on a screen without headphones was one of the most traumatic experiences ive ever had playing videogames. I just can not do VR. It would break me.

2 outdid 1 as far as a survival horror game goes, but 3 completely dropped the scariness factor and replaced it with really fun gameplay and co-op. Dead Space 2 and 3 are superior than 1. Dead Space 1 had some pretty disgustingly repetitive map layouts, but a decent scare factor for it's time.

i liked it, i mean he kind of had to express himself otherwise the hallucinations wouldnt really work as well, they were too personal to him
it was fucking great later in the game when he starts to actually act a little crazy after them, screaming at nicole and practically raving
and hearing how much crazier he sounds when stomping shit
he actually seems traumatized from the first game, and you wouldnt get that feeling if he was still totally silent, and besides he was usually alone in 2, it would be weird without SOMEONE talking like in 1
then they went too far in 3 with his love triangle bullshit, talking all the time
>>

the biggest problem with him talking is the fucking writing, most of the dialogue he has doesn't fit the situations most of the time, and also alone how the guy delivers his lines

for example when you're at the church, and those things that made chicken sounds and tackle you start to attack, then while those things are attacking he's talking with ellie like all is good

but I agree that in the final chapters the dialogue is pretty great, especially the FUCK YOU AND FUCK YOUR MARKER that was great

I'd definitely play Dead Space 1 in VR. That game in the dark with headphones was one of my favourite vidya experiences 2bh. Not scary to the point of 'trauma', but in this rare sweetspot where the tension and atmosphere are nearly unbearable, and it makes the anticipation of combat so bad, but also the satisfaction of fucking destroying cunts so much sweeter.

Game got so much right. But i'm a big sucker for sci-fi shit.

If F.E.A.R had managed to strike that kind of balance, where the spooky factor feeds into making the combat satisfying, it would be one of my all time GOAT games.

I think the part I liked the most about Dead Space was Isaac.

He wasn't a soldier or some ex military cop or whatever have you. Instead you have the equivalent of a space janitor fighting these complete fucking horrors and he's just trying to hold all this shit together.

Wish more games would do that.

Dead Space 3 has 1 redeeming factor. ONE.

If you play the game in bro-op mode, 1 player takes Issac, and the other player takes the new guy. Issacs a necromorph battle hardend badass. New guy is still fresh.

Whoever is playing the new guy will see crazy ass shit sometime. Person in the distance calling to them, waving them over. Woman running past something and down a hall that dissapears around the corner. Loud bangs and noises nearby. Somebody behind glass begging for help. etc. Issac player will see none of this, so unless you know about this shit ahead of time, the Issac player will literally be saying over voice chat "Dude, I dont know what the fuck you are talking about, you are crazy.", while the other player is going "No way, Im serious! This lady just waved to me and pointed me down this hallway, but shes gone now!".

The thing I loved from 2 is the semless gameplay without a single loading screen and fucking story going non-stop.

I'm literally replaying it right now, it's just as awesome as I remember. Not having Isaac constantly making bullshit immersion-breaking smart-ass comments automatically makes it better than 2 and 3. And the atmosphere and super-creepy environmental design was the whole reason I liked the series in the first place - they totally trashed it in 3, and because of that, I have no interest in playing that game again.

It's just wave after wave of dumb enemies running at you on the ice planet. No tension, no atmosphere. Doesn't remotely belong in a DS game no matter how you slice it.

>>321116479

I've never heard anyone say anything bad about 2. Only thing I've heard its that its not very scary, which isn't something inherently bad (And if you got scared playing dead space, you're a fucking faggot)

3 is fucking terrible, universal ammo, terrible weapon crafting, microtransactions, "sidequests", absolutely no necromorph variety (they literally dropped like 20 of the already present enemy types and now theres only like 6 or 8 and you fight the same 2 for most of the game) and its not as gory.
>>
>>321132456

>the atmosphere and super-creepy environmental design

bingo

that one room early in the game, with the broken tram dangling in the middle? the sounds, the lighting, the design; that one room puts DS1 above the other 2.

and I honestly really enjoyed 2. but DS1 was so consistent with its aesthetic, everything about the Ishimura was great. From the clean areas like Medica, to the damaged spots exposed to the vacuum, to the raw guts of the ship like Engineering.

It's so much more claustrophobic, but with enough variety that it doesn't get too old.

Horror isn't a genre, its a setting.

Dead Space is in a horror setting, but it's not a horror game, just like how Bloodborne is in a horror setting, but it's not a horror game.

You'd honestly have to be a huge pussy to get scared from playing dead space.

Sure the game is tense, but "tense" doesn't equal scary.
>>
>>321116479
Deaf Space 1 and 2 underwent the Alien and Aliens treatment.

First installment was more horror focused with strategic gunplay whereas the second refined a lot of the gameplay mechanics and turned to a more action horror genre. DS2 isn't bad by any huge stretch and is still a solid game in the Dead Space series.

The thing that bugged me most about DS3 is ditching save stations. I guess drop in/out coop needed a different system.

With save stations there's no question where you saved, what items you had, etc. I quit DS3 during some areas after getting key items, it loads my "most recent" save back in the start of said area, and I ended up with two key items from having to get it again, but still having one in my inventory.

Depending on the aesthetic intent, it most clearly is, and a Gothic horror at that. It uses tons of genre motifs and pays homage to various works.

Denying horror a genre status after Castle of Otranto is really illiterate, no matter whether you turn the pages or press the buttons.

You cant complain about 3 and say 2 was great, because they both suffer from the same problems.

Dead space 1 was scary because Isaac felt like a clunky tin man.

All of that is completely lost in 2. Isaac moves like a featherweight boxer, you can combo together melee and stomps infinitely, and there were convenient metal rods to TK into necros laying around everywhere.

3 might not be scary, but at least it has a good buddy cop dynamic. 2 really has nothing going for it.

I say this as one of the only dead space fans on the site, I've beaten every single game multiple times, watched the movies, and even read the book.

The psychological horror aspect was well done, though iOS definitely knocked out out of the park in comparison. It made the actual shooting feel much smoother and getting around felt much more precise, though you still felt like a bit of a tank once you got your armor on.

It still asks you to go through areas slowly, making you expect jumps and an encounter frequently though it doesn't always happen, the improved Zero-G is nothing short of fantastic, fighting Necromorphs in general felt much more precise with more options at your disposal but you were still very vulnerable since they made it much easier for Necromorphs to sneak up on you constantly, and the encounters with things like Stalkers did a great job at making you feel cornered.

Then we have the entire Ishimura segment to speak of, where they're constantly faking you out, the entire first twenty or so minutes is absolutely no encounters, just sounds and audio logs, and they really stepped up their A game at that point.

3 does have the psychological horror aspect as well, but unless you're doing co-op it feels much more toned down in comparison, adding human enemies, though not frequent, wasn't a good choice, dodge roll was a bad addition, and the same goes for universal ammo choices. Weapon customization was a decent direction though.

The only thing that made the return to the Ishimura effective and memorable was the tension was actually done well. Before that segment, you walked from room to room with a guaranteed attack/fight. No build up, no spooking. Dead Space 2 was essentially another room, another fight, for me. Then they even managed to fuck that part up with a huge enemy rush at the end of it. But boy, walking through those sterile, bagged corridors was the best part of that game.

No. He's more of a superman in DS2 because of what he's already achieved in DS1. Also because he knows his waifu is dead and he doesn't care anymore AKA the Max Payne effect. Up until he gets a new waifu. She gets taken away from him too.

I thought 2 was even better than 1. Some people are ticked because Isaac stopped being a silent protagonist, but the dialogue they wrote for him is actually solid. Not as many jump scares I suppose, but the atmosphere is still there along with greater variety in level and enemy design. Also, best ending in vidya released in the past ten years. 3, on the other hand, is not a good Dead Space game. It just feels like they should've spent another year on it. As an action shooter with horror elements, yes, it's a good game, but the story (especially the epilogue) was kind of a slap to the face. And don't get me started about that stupid ass love triangle between Isaac, Ellie and what's-his-shit. The way the characters were written in 3 wasn't even half-assed, maybe a quarter-ass.
>>
>>321146510
Player 2 felt so obsolete in that game though, outside of the sections where you see different shit to the Isaac player, you see every cutscene from Isaacs perspective when playing as Carver, its fucking stupid. It made him feel really tacked on, like its a feature they crowbar'd in late in development.

>>
I was beginning to think I was the only one who liked Dead Space.

Here's what I think. Dead Space 1 has the best atmosphere, but the gameplay is sluggish. Dead Space 2 suffers a bit in atmosphere, but really refined the gameplay. And Dead Space 3 is a disappointment on pretty much all counts. Well, I guess if I have to give it something, it is cool how in co-op the player on Carver will occasionally hallucinate while Isaac sees nothing.
>>
I completely forgot that at the start of Dead Space 1 you have that radio static that comes from the Ishimura, that's actually the surviving crew from Extraction trying to keep you the hell away from there. But then again Extraction wasn't made yet so that may have been tacked on since it sounded more like Necromorph noises than anything else.

Space suits are designed for low-zero atmosphere environments, there little to nothing for the heat of the suit to transfer to in the vacuum of space.

Its main goal is to keep the user from cooking in their own excess body heat since it has nowhere to go, which is why there's coolant and not heaters built into space suits.

A suit in an arctic environment wouldn't do you much good, I'd imagine.

You'll still need to fiddle a bit regardless if it's Origin or Steam.

You need to force V-Sync through something like Radeon Pro or whatever the nVidia equivalent is and disable it in-game since it locks the framerate at 30 and destroys mouse sensitivity. As always a controller is recommended but mouse and keyboard do work.

I couldn't get AA to work on either 1 or 2 by forcing it so I can't help you there though.

No no, if you turn on V-Sync in-game it will lock the framerate at 30 and destroys mouse sensitivity. If you disable it mouse sensitivity is fine and runs at 60 but tears. You need to force V-Sync through an outside program rather the game and then it's fine.

>TFW Visceral commented a few months ago that Dead Space was not Dead and that they will return to it but couldn't at the time of the interview as they were busy with Battlefield Hardline's release
>tfw its been 2 years since Dead Space 3
>DS3 ended with the earth being completely fucked and surrounded by a group of Brother Moons
>Necromorph outbreak on earth
>Isaac and Carver are either Dead or crash landed on a Brother Moon

This worries me. On one hand They can knock it out of the park and and finally wrap the series up for good with a game that for the first time takes place on Earth and has an outbreak happen there as well. Remember the original black marker was dropped into the ocean off the coast of the Yucatan peninsula. It might play a part. On the other hand in two years we've seen EA turn into fucking jew assholes along with the rest of the game industry and who knows what kind of new people work at visceral now.

Something similar happened to me while playing 2. I always make a save in chapter 5 or 6, and only around 12 do I make my second one. Just recently did a PC Hardcore run since my original was on the 360. The four hours of terror that was 5-12 including the Stalkers right at the start as soon as you land from the Ishimura had me so terrified. DESPITE ALL THE RAGE.jpg
2MB, 1900x1200px
Just a reminder.

Dead Space 2 is the single greatest "cinematic" video game ever made.

The gameplay is solid with differing enemy types, interesting weaponry/equipment, and great enemy, puzzle, and set piece pacing.

The atmosphere and horror are superb, even if the don't reach the heights of the first game but I'd argue those lesser aspects are made up for by the quality of the action they're replaced with. Some genuinely great scenes stick with me to this day.

The story is mysterious, varied, well written, and well executed while also doing some clever things along the way. The cast, too, is interesting and well acted with their own motivations, backgrounds, and personalities.

The game is gorgeous to look at and the graphical difference between it and its predecessor are actually rather staggering. The art design is easily some of the best work of the last generation.

The world design benefits from the excellent art design and manages to take you through many different environment themes even though the game takes place in a single station.

There is no HUD superimposed on top of the game and all elements related to it are in the game world while still being just as helpful and in view as any game with normal HUD.

The sound design is fantastic and well implemented and the the score, while mostly ambient, keeps things in the proper spooky mood. The few stand out tracks that are less ambiance and more music are fantastic as well.

Gameplay bleeds right into cutscenes and then back out again. We never leave Isaac's perspective and follow him the whole way. The only loading screen in the entire thing is the very first one when you boot it up. After that the game never stops until you do or reach end. There is zero down time.

The game is lengthy and highly replayable with difficulty modes, new game plus, collectibles that add to the lore and your arsenal, and a fantastic easter egg gun.
>>
>>321171186
I agree completely

People tend to overlook things like the amazing HUD that's built into the game and the lack of loading screens

>>
>>321172706
You can't get bogged down focusing on the atmosphere, just zone it out and keep an eye on vent placements and room/corridor layouts and you'll have a much easier time

My tip would be to keep moving forward whether you like it or not, it's like ripping off a bandaid, but eventually the bandaids don't hurt so much anymore

I put in a copy I got for my birthday ages ago (I had already played it) It looks like it's fucking new gen shit and I love it, my biggest complain would probably be that the controls are ungodly levels of sluggish, and some things I either never used or felt awkward being in that controller spot, to this day I still do Stasis instead of Kinesis on the controller.
>>
Story is fucked. They ruined it with 3, I liked Ellie a lot
>>
So 3 was definitely bad.

I had to play coop with a bro to stomache my way through the game, the only interesting parts were the sequences where his character was hallucinating and mine wasn't. The game doesn't even tell you, so I only found out during one sequence when my bro was staring intently at a barrel asking me about "toy soldiers," and I told him not to shoot the explosive barrel he was looking at.

After figuring out we each were seeing things differently in parts of the game it was slightly more entertaining. Cool idea, too bad it was wasted on the worst game in the series.

The game is so forgettable the only other things I can recall are:

1.) Seeing a Marker in the city and saying "fucking Unis"

2.) Near the end there was a part with child like necros that was just too bullshit to slog through and I wanted to just quit the game but we could tell we were close to the end so we just kicked the difficulty down to easy.

That game was such a slog holy shit.
>>
That's it, I'm buying the games again, this time on steam. That pack For 5 eurobucks is a steal.
>>
I want to play these but im fucking horrible and really impatient at puzzles. Are they a big part of 1 & 2 and how difficult are they usually?
>>
>>321177465
it's not re4 level of convoluted
>>
>>321177465
They aren't that bad. The puzzles in Zero-G can be disorienting but other than that they take like a minute or two at most and usually you just need to put a thing in a thing and you are done.

Meh, I managed to finish DS2 when I was in High School and I'm dumb as a brick.

Dead Space 1 was such a pleasant surprise. It was approaching RE4 levels of excellence. Meaty campaign, legit scary, satisfying guns, reasonably decent plot, interesting upgrade system.

Dead space 2 was good but not quite where DS1 was. It was more polished, but felt more linear (even though the first was linear the 2nd didn't feature a map, it was all just waypoint based). Going back to the Ishimura was a fucking excellent moment.

DS 3 I haven't played but I saw and read enough to tell me that the franchise has been fully butchered. Such a shame.

>implying there was much horror to wring out of it

the necromorphs stopped being scary halfway through 2, and we all started shooting every corpse well before then. im fine with isaac actually toughening up and killing shit easier in 3. gameplay wise the only thing that bugged me was the turret section in the ship. that was corny as fuck.

I can't ever remember getting stuck on a puzzle except for the big ass fan puzzle (which was just me being stupid in the end). You should just give it a go.

DS3 featured:
a flashback prologue/intermediologue kinda fuckin' thing where you play as a different character;
Isaac talking all the fucking time, a la Halo 4 Master Chief;
Cuckoldry as a chief story element;
Gun crafting;
Not scary stuff;
A prolonged segment that was reminiscent of the castle section of RE4, except this wasn't cool or fun. It was just bad and confusing;
Co-op with Mr. Red Armor;
Preclusion from segments of the game which required co-op;
And probably more shit, but I played it like 2 or 3 years ago now

You're forgetting how much of a fucking ammo sponge every God-damned enemy was to the point where, even maxed out, nothing felt satisfying to wield, not even the kickass energy-melee weapon thing.
>>
>>321117583
He's right.

Dead Space stopped being atmospheric after 1, 2 was just hot garbage.

At least DS3 embraced it and co-op was great, but it lost any semblance of tension because of it.

>Cuckoldry as a chief story element

Fucking....WHAT?
>>
>>321181878
You don't know?
Well, it's not really cuckoldry, she left him before she went for the douche.
>>
>>321182000
Yeah, but it hadn't been that long since she had left him that she hooked up with captain cockbag.

If you`re stuck, just use a guide. Don`t let your incompetence halt your fun (and horror)

So many Predators would try to hunt it because of the challenge, though.

So, he fights his way through hordes of monsters fucking TWICE to save this bitch, and she ends up piling into some other tool?

Fuck outta here.

Well, that fagbreath dies, and she goes right back into 'Issac, I love you'.

Is there a way to play in DS2 without all annoying pre-order shit that is given for free in every shop?
Pirate 1.0 or something?
>>
>>321184158
Pretty much. It got added in one of the final patches so it's either ignore it or get an older version.
>>
>>321116479
1 was great if a bit clunky. 2 was good, more streamlined, and more wtf moments. 3 was CoD wearing the flayed skin of Dead Space. There was no horror, and went straight to action and jump scare. The weapon building was interesting. Not to say it was a bad game, but it wasn't Dead Space. Also, universal ammo. Looks like my grenade chucking gun uses the same ammo as my flamethrower. Somehow.
>>
>>321117673
And you don't see that as a problem in a survival horror game with limited pockets? And, as another anon pointed out, the other 2 only game you ammo for guns that you're carrying.
>>
>>321184065
Fuck that. Too late. I'm hooking up with a fucking necromorph QT3.14 now bitch,
>>
>>321184993

How is that any better? Enemies should drop random ammo if you want to make it 'right'. I would assume, in the future (and with Isaac being an engineer), that he'd design weapons and ammunition more intelligently because he's kind of stranded with limited ammo to begin with.
>>
>>321121282
Space suits are designed for cooling, not heating. There is no "coldness" of space, just vacuum, and vacuum doesn't transfer heat like that.
>>
Since we're about to hit.
What's your favorite Necromorph?
Lurkers for me.
