It's actually fun to command your squad to go do things and set up in optimal positions knowing that they can do their job well. There's lots of banter and every character is fun. It's one of the only squad based games where I actually felt like they were helping me as much as I helped them.
My only complaint is that it's much too short.

I played it a few years ago and had a blast. It's a very simple game, almost feels like an on-rails shooter, since it's so linear, but the team banter was fucking great.

It's a bit of both, it's not actually turbo-amazing, but it's not terrible and whether you like it or not depends on if the strong parts manage to get you. It's a bit more edgy/mature take on Star Wars (but only a bit, though you do get to murder children a couple of timesno, really), it has amazing soundtrack (easily the best part) and some nice writing for your squaddies. I like it despite the flaws.

The prequels were much better written, they had actual characters and story, not a bunch of memes and one-liners that lack any emotion or coherence. Luke is a cliched everyboy "hero" that goes through an absurdly rapid transformation between the fifth and the sixth episodes. Anakin's emotional instability and his exposure as a psychopath are gripping; and his doomed relationship with Padme is touching. In the "original trilogy" Han, Leia, Darth Vader and Obi Wan are complete meme characters, nothing about them is remotely believable or human. And why doesn't anyone care about deaths in those movies? Leia's planet destruction, Luke's stepparents' death, all of the blown up rebels--the list could go on--all the deaths are forgotten moments later.
As for direction, the movies from the "original trilogy" were mostly incoherent, badly edited and full of logical problems. The prequel trilogy is a work of a "vulgar auteur".
I feel neutral about the series overall, and honestly don't care about trolling or contrarianism. Here are my sincere rankings:

OP, if you're going to play it, see if you experience this graphical problem. Notice the blotchy textures on the clone trooper armor.
To fix this, turn bumpmapping to 'low'.

Everything about the game is above average except the core gameplay, which is extremely standard.
However, since the game knows where to end and doesn't overstay its welcome, along with it having excellent pacing and tone shifts in each level (The ghost ship in particular, holy shit god tier sense of pacing right there), its a really REALLY enjoyable experience.

No they would only ever use un-vetted xeno weapons in the most dire of circumstances. Using them is a form of tech heresy. The xeno weapons it is talking about are usually old relic weapons that have been vetted by the Mechanicus. I know this because I play the RPG, and we had one member running around with a massive fuckoff relic xeno blade which he was using to open doors.
There is a massive range of weaponry available to the Deathwatch that you don't see in regular 40K. Some of the specialised ammo is just nasty. And things like Cryo Grenades are both horrifically effective and fun.

I'm glad it pretty much holds up as highly as it did in teenage me's mind. Looks like ass, but then it probably was the same on the XBOX HUEG.

Well they could do so without breaking the lore in that you could play a more tech orientated Chapter. Maybe a Black Shield, which is a Marine whose Chapter is unknown due to either disgrace or being nearly wiped out. Perhaps have special sanction to use as you see fit. But the rest of the team should keep you at arms length for being a potential heretic. Which could create some nice bants.
The lore is mostly what the setting has going for it. And what draws a lot of people to it. Start to disregard that and we will potentially end up with shit like female Marines. Which are unnecessary because the Sororitas exist and they are badass. You can justify almost anything within the lore, but there are generally going to be consequences and repercussions for things that are heretical or blasphemous.

Blood Ravens are fun to play in the RPG. I didn't even intend for him to end up falling to Tzeentch but clearly Tzeentch had other plans. At this point he hears the 'Emperor' in his head. And has accidentally summoned one Daemon Prince. Which I used to trample an Eldar Exarch on its way to murder me for summoning it. Perils are fun like that.

The rules are basically one it is summoned by the Perils, which is when a psyker horrifically fucks up using a power, it doesn't go away until it is either killed or the summoner dies. And it will attempt to kill the summoner. Given its size it has a trample rule. I knew it was coming for me so I moved to have the Exarch in between me and it. So the Exarch got squished on the way through, it killed me, and I had to burn a Fate point so my character wasn't removed from the game due to death. Fate points are basically a fixed number of re-rolls you can use in the game, and they replenish each game, unless you actually burn the point instead of use it for special things like this. I then got to point out that via technicality it did kill me so it would return to the warp, but I still got to live. Just as planned even if no one believed me. Well planned from the point that the thing turned up unplanned.
