Kind of, but sadly it didn't go far enough. It doesn't have cutscenes or take control away from the player, but it still has invisible walls (which, for a game that sometimes hides secrets behind shit you need to jump over, is fucking retarded) and some other, modern sensibilities in its design. All in all, I never enjoyed it that much.
Best FPS are the FPS without or with little backstory.

Nah, it's just about how the present it. Any game that forces its story down your throat is that much worse for it, but a game can have a rich backstory and still let you explore it (or ignore it) at your own volition.

it isn't alive as fuck but it there always seems to be a 3-7 player dm and a 12-14-ish player ctf going on just on servers with favorable ping to me
checked just now and there are ~120 players on the hubs. some of those are private matches & they're spread across the us & ue so servers you have good pings to will be limited but it is 4pm -8GMT on a week day
I wish. Games like Wolfenstein the New Order would be so fucking good if they were more like Wolfenstein 3D and just threw you into a level to explore and kill shit.
