it's a imaginary friends game like lots of JRPG , but I sure enjoyed the hell out of it, it got great writing for a Japanese port.
turn based works best if you're playing the role of commander or strategists
so it works best in monster catching rpgs and srpgs
in traditional rpgs it doesn't work that well because you want to play your characters no tell them what to do
and in general turn based rpgs of any kind should only be on handheld

I partially agree with you. A lot of turn-based games end up being grind-to-win, e.g. Pokémon where just overlevelling your starter obliterates the need for actually thinking.
Try XCom or Darkest Dungeon. One's a strategy, the other is a party RPG. The more skillful turn-based games end up revolving around knowledge, preparation, and risk assessment.
