I think it would have been better to drop the whole doom base subplot, have rey still get kidnapped, and have the excuse to rescue her be hey shes seen the rest of the map, and the first order has the other parts and is decrypting them at this secret base. Then Poe can chime in about how the one guy kylo mind ripped info out of him. So now they have to get Rey back so the order doesnt find out the rest of the map, and so they can get the other pieces the empire has, then we can: cue a super secret attack on the secret order base to rescue Rey + get map back, that culminates in the base being exploded and all the other shit. Also lets at least let Rey escape by some less contrived force assisted means. This way we tie in other plot points, avoid rehashing ANH, and dont have R2D2 deus ex machina

They tried explaining the dynamics of the war between the Trade Federation and the Republic in the prequels and it fucking sucked, no one cares about political bullshit. You didn't need to understand the dynamics between the Empire and the Rebels in the original trilogy, the first shot with the Star Destroyer is all you need. From that point on the idea of the Empire being evil is never brought into question once, despite being filled with a bunch of assholes just doing their jobs.

You see Luke's lack of training and him realising he's in way over his head as Vader just demolishes him, he rarely even tries for killing blows and mostly just parries Luke and aims to wound.
The entire Emperor sequence of Jedi is one of the few redeeming features of the movie, it's so good that it makes up for all the Endor bullshit.

Those first two points were my only major complains about the movie. Kylo Ren immediately had more depth to him than fucking Anakin. He was a pissy young man, angry at everyone and quick to throw a temper-tantrum, and that came off quite well in the film.
