I love it. The characters, story, aesthetics, and gameplay are all great.
My favorite part are the sidequests and the final dungeon. Creating Doomtrain, the CC Club quest, Deep Sea Research Center, Cetra Ruins, and Cactuar Island were all neat.
I also think the Galbadia Garden "dungeon" at the end of Disc 2 is underrated. Making the player have to think about the map in their head since the areas all looked the same was a nice touch and it has a great soundtrack to it. Plus you can fight muthafuckin' Cerberus who can easily Tornado the fuck out of you.

It's bad. It's really abhorrently sub-awful. They must have thought having shitty graphics and lame CGI sequences would have made up for the trash balance, backwards ass leveling system and kinda cool GF system.
There is a place in Final Fantasy for junctioning or Guardian pals who learn abilities to help you out and specialize you. This place is not a game where you're punished for leveling, you have to draw magic like an asshole.
The plot being enormous ass is besides the point. It's a bad game first, and a worse plot second. FFVII is looked upon so much more fondly because it's classic gameplay with an easy to understand materia system, and a very nice plot about "stop the bad guys from killing the earth".

Being, magic should not just be your stats. I get that they go up from Fire to Fira to Thundaga or whatever, but drawing to 100 and junctioning it as your stats is dumb. You NEED those stats if you're leveling as you progress, you can't use magic without getting weaker, the game should encourage you to actually level.
There's a reason they dropped that awful system after one single game. And Limit Breaks being only at low HP so it's a high risk high reward thing is stupid.

They could have balanced the game better. Limit breaks are too easy to abuse.
But your complaints about getting weaker as you use magic are common misconceptions. For starters, you don't have to draw to 100. You can draw here and there as you go along and you'll be fine. Secondly, you barely lose any stat when you use a magic and its no problem to just draw again. Finally, there are only so many slots for magic junctions. By Disc 3 there is no need to even junction the elemental spells or stuff like Double and Slow, so you can safely use them in battles.
Or you can bypass all that shit entirely with Enc None and refining magic from Cards. FFVIII has some of the most freedom in how you want to play. Its essentially a situation where you get to set your own difficulty.

If we're gonna consider every single mechanic in the FF universe, then stuff like OHKO bosses, losing the best weapon in the game by not opening a chest at the right time, missing party members by not doing hidden quests or story locked events are easily the worst things the series does.

I'm really getting tired of this being the defacto argument in every FFVII debate. Most people have played FFVII. They just have a different view of the character than the FFVII defense patrol.
If any other game came out with a character who was so insular and brooding, then was stuck in a wheelchair with mako aids, he would be a joke. Yet FFVII fans have to work as hard as they can to explain how 'deep' Cloud is.

This is my post and I play old rpgs all the time and no one wants to have a thread about them, I wish more people would give these old rpgs a chance but I doubt itll ever happen. I liked the romance and the setting was different enough. Gameplay was easy to break but I tried not to and got enough enjoyment out of it.
