So are video games bigger than movies now?
>>
Remember that movie tickets cost aroung $12 and video games cost $60. Sometimes $100 depending on Jew tactics from publishers.
>>
Considering games are 60 dollars on release, and movie tickets cost considerably lower than that, I'd say there's no really comparing them.

Either way, movies still and always will affect society more than games do/will.
>>
>>321077670
>always will
You sure about that?
>>
1. Games are more expensive

2. That's only the global you gotta put the American numbers along with it. It still doesn't hit 800 but comes damn close.
>>
>>321077219
Games that sell that well only come out once every few years. Movies that do that well come out multiple times a year.
>>
>>321077605
Why even still make movies if you can be a shoddy video game company with questionable quality and make more money
>>
They'll both continue to grow. But using records as a measurement for how popular a medium is is inaccurate.
>>
>>321077219
1. No. Force awakens has yet to release in China (2nd largest market for movies and GTA 5). This is not a complete comparison.

2. They're getting there - GTA 5 has been noted in many, many, many business articles as being one of the most profitable and fastest selling pieces of entertainment media in history.
>>
>>321078124
Why even still make video games if you can be a shoddy mobile casino company with questionable quality and make more money.
>>
>>321078026
Not really.
>>
>>321077670
I don-t know about that mate.

Since games are a realitvely new medium, a large part of older society doesnt even acknowledge them, however in younger societies they are becoming more common, in both males and females. So maybe 2 or 3 generations they will be as mainstream as movies.
>>
Assuming that a game and a movie ticket (ideally) cost $60 and $12 respectively:

GTAV: 13,333,333 sales
Star Wars TFA: 44,083,333 sales
>>
>>321077817
>last of us
>citizen kane of gaming
Yeah, I'm sure you manchild.
>>
>>321078371
Both JW and TFA came out this year...
>>
>>321078359
Name a more profitable mobile app than GTA 5
>>
>>321078371
Totally.

>top 20 highest grossing movies of all time
>14 came out in the last 5 years
>>
>>321077219
It costs more to consume a game than it does to consume a movie.
>>
>>321078475
We're talking about the future kid. Seeing as how video games are now basically hollywood movies with interactivity, and the future holds virtual reality, I'd say you're pretty shortsighted.
>>
>>321078504
Call of duty ghosts came out same year as GTA 5 and sold just as well
>>
>>321078518
Candy Crush was making $850,000 a day at one point.

And you need to consider that it took literally no effort to make such a piece of garbage.
>>
>>321078927
That's entirely based on luck though.
>>
>>321078927
Just the thought of that is depressing.
>>
Movies have a finite number of first day/weekend viewers from theater capacity and their numbers will remain relatively high as people find the time to go see them.

Videogames can sell hundreds of thousands of copies to people who won't play the game for days, weeks, or months but pre-ordered or still bought the game at launch for whatever reason.
>>
>>321078321
And yet it wasn't even good. Video games, like movies, make the most money when they appeal to the lowest common denominator.
>>
>>321078570
Adjusted for inflation, no.
>>
>>321079146
The same could be said for the success of video games.
>>
>>321078927
>you didn't buy into the gold meme back when it was $50 dollars a coin

>you didn't buy into the social media meme

>you didn't buy into the mobile game meme

>>
>>321079469
Why didn't I just throw away a few bucks and make $10 of bitcoins? Fuck my shitty life.
>>
>>321079146
>entirely based on luck
How? They intentionally cashed in on the casual audience. How do you call that "lucky"

You could apply that to Flappy Bird, sure
>>
>>321078570
>price of tickets go up
OH HEY LOOK AT ALL THIS MONEY WE MADE FOR OUR MOVIE!

For the longest time a local theater only charged around $5.50 for a ticket opening night/weekend and $4.50 for matinee.

Now it's around $8 and $6.50 for matinee. Advanced tickets were also only $8 and now they're $12!
>>
>>321077219
I mean a videogame costs $60 and a movie ticket costs $10-12, so it's not exactly a 1:1 comparison
>>
Remember: For every item sold with a star wars character on it, a jew rubs his hands and grins.

The Star Wars franchise made far more than $800 million on opening day.
>>
Eh, not quiet there yet. You have to remember the difference in prices between games and movies. Also games are kinda getting there. I mean have you noticed lately how games are strangely getting real actors in them? its not huge names but slowly their making their way into games.
>>
>>321079873
>only $8 for tickets

Don't know what shitty midwest state you live in, it's like $17 here for the first few days of a new movie and normal tickets are around $14 a piece no matter what.
>>
>>321077219
They've been for a while.
>>
>>321080106
>SW franchise made more than 800mill$
So did the gta franchise
I d say the gaming industry is more profitable than the film industry
What was the budget for SW7 ?
I mean COD budget are extrem high but they still sell every year millions

http://www.usinflationcalculator.com/

Titanic would have grossed $2,923,012,893.17 if released in 2009, beating avatar.

But even with inflation rates taken in to account there is still no factor included for how many people there are on the planet and how many have access to a TV+VHS/DVD/BR or a cinema. And now that pirating is more mainstream than ever we cant really use money as a way of measuring success and popularity.
>>
>>321079435
Not really. Tons of work was put into GTA 5.
>>321079803
Millions of other apps cash in on the casual audience. Candy crush success is 100% luck.
>>
>>321077219
They've been decades.

I remember reading that Zelda OoT generated more money than Titanic and Halo 2 generated more than any movie ever at that point.
>>
>>321081348
Both are soulless cash grabs, you fool.
>>
>>321082017
Yeah like 1k people worked on gta5 but what about blockbuster movies ? Probably way more
>>
>>321082679
Well no one is saying blockbuster movies are based on luck. Shitty mobile apps are.
>>
>>321078124
GTA V cost 3 times as much as TFA to make, and no one is buying their kids $100 lego GTA sets for Christmas
>>
>>321077219
Nah, mate. As other anons pointed out there is the price difference for consuming the two mediums and the fact that Star Wars hasn't been made available globally yet.

On top of that, video games aren't going to be "bigger" until the general public/normies stop seeing it as the devil poisoning the minds of their youth and using it as the acceptable scapegoat to blame problems that are caused by shitting upbringings/parenting.

The problem is that video games are still widely considered by many (primarily gen X and baby boomer shitters) to be children's toys or a waste of time only for losers and degenerates.

Yes, they are blatantly wrong but jack shit can be done to change widely inherited cultural attitudes. The only thing that will change that is time and the passing of generations until the people who appreciate video games as an art form are old fucks and outdated attitudes die out.

Then I'm sure when we're all old fucks we'll do the same thing and demonize some other art form only because we don't understand it.

SW is a brand
Gta is satire
Why would anyone buy satire ?
>>
>>321083684
Games are toys.
And to be honest, the desperate attempt at legitimzing games with shitty quasi-arthouse film faggotry along side AAA mediocrity only makes gaming look like a pale imitation of the absolute worst of movies and televison.

The only way gaming will come into it's own if it kicks out those who would deem themselves our critics and "artists" and embraces what makes games the unique media that it is. What makes it enticing fun and enlightening.
>>
>>321082856
Thats wrong Anon

Star Wars : Episode 7 budget - $200 million
Grand Theft Auto V budget - $240 million
>>
>>321084179
fopr the same reason most games are selling for the last 11 years
>brand name
>>
>>321082819
Everything's based on luck. Popularity is completely random. For every quality product with effort put into it that is popular there are many other products with equal quality and effort that are nowhere near as popular.
>>
>>321084674
>and embraces what makes games the unique media that it is. What makes it enticing fun and enlightening.
They were already doing that back in the 80s and 90s. They just stopped doing so once it became a big money industry.

Where the fuck do you live that movie tickets cost $12? Where I live the cheapest they are is $20 for the tiniest screens and $35 if you want to see it on a screen that's actually decent.
>>
>>321085424
Ironically enough games only became really big money because of the gamey games that the AAA guys hate and sony/ms shit on.
Now with gaming contracting to 6th gen numbers can anyone really say that their lust for that AAA dreams was good?

Hilarious really.
>>
The games industry has been outperforming the movie industry for years now anon. Movies can't keep up.
>>
>>321085789
Not that anon, but I don't live in a 3rd world shithole. I live in Florida and a ticket cost $8
>>
>>321082017
Tons of work went into the marketing.
>>
>>321084674
I'm not saying that, in order for games to be art, they have to hipster, "far-out there" indie "deep meaning bullshit". Any other art form has that dumb shit and it's still dumb hipster shit. Any other art form can still embrace what is unique about it and still be an art form. Action films are art, Comedies films are art. Superhero comics are art. Yes, there are shitty ones and higher quality examples, but that doesn't make the medium any less of an art form.

Other mediums embrace "fun and enlightening" while still being art and video games can do the same.
>>
>>321077605
most faggots who likes star wars will see it several times
>>
>>321084179

GTA is a brand anon, don't fool yourself.
>>
uh, HATE to break it to you timmy, but that global sale includes all preorders, limited editions and any sku for GTAV. If we still default it to 800 mil, that is approximately 13 million sales.

if we take star wars, which sold out in many theaters, and go even above average movie ticket price (let's say twenty five) that still means more than 20 million fucking people saw star wars in 3 days. That and most games decline after their first week far more massively then film. Expect an equally strong week for SW.

What did op mean by this?
>>
tickets are 12 dollars and the movie is 2 hours long

video games are 60 dollars and are over a hundred hours long

hurr

Not at all... for movies its all about the merchandise. Always has been. Also movies get a second release as dvd/blu-ray... games dont really get this. They peak after 2weeks.
