That's all you need but you can go in blind and still have lots of fun. Just don't switch weapons or team member too often because they have their own exp than isn't shown. And don't grind because bosses scale with you.

A lot of obfuscated game mechanics, as per SaGa tradition, but a fair bit of difficulty as well. (Fucking Eagle's Nest, Lob Omen, The fucking Fallen)
Also in SaGa tradition, there are like two interesting characters.
No excuse not to try it out though; it's a solid port, and I've gotten several playthroughs out of it. The wikia for the game has a fair bit of info about all the hidden mechanics

Yes and then you have advanced and hybrid vocations. You have 2 red, 2 yellow and 2 blue vocations. warrior/thief/mage dealio. Then you have red/blue, yellow/blue and red/yellow.

By best class what do you mean?
When you first start out you get 3 starting options.
Fighter - standard sword and shield user
Strider - Dagger + shortbow
Mage - basic magic
There is nothing wrong with fighter if you like typical sword and shield gameplay. However I find strider to be the most fun, anything with a bow lets you get the fully enjoyment out of the game. Mage is absolutely terrible, you only play it if you want to grind out some of your sorcerer abilities early.
Once you get to gran soren, you can switch to all the other classes.

The classes are:

Fighter - Sword and Shield kind of... well fighter. Very basic.
Strider - Daggers and bow. You can kill up close and far away. The bow lack an auto aim feature meaning you literally have to aim it yourself as in doing so in real time in the game. The bow is still extremely useful and surprisingly powerful even on that note but casuals might end up sticking with the daggers in which case you may as well get the shield from the fighter class.
Mage - Healer and buffer plain and simple. Only pawns should be a mage unless you for whatever reason actually like to be a heal slut. Other magic classes lack a heal spell so getting at least one mule pawn just to have a mage is a given.

Note the basic two classes (ignoring mage here) are still good classes nevertheless. Sticking to them isn't necessary a bad idea. Also keeping a pawn a mage for the heal is recommended unless you get someone else pawn for the task.
Warrior - Two handed weapons and for whatever reason half of the skills you can have on a character because of it. Guts if you wanna be Guts.
Ranger - Less focus about the daggers and more about the bow. Can't even remember if they keep the daggers to be honest.
Sorcerer - A real fucking wizard. One of the main reasons /v/ love this game. You get amazing spells that actually feel like spells and not just a fire/ice/lightning based magic missile.

Does anybody remember the quick way to get a character BBI-ready in this game? I hate playing through the story.
If I remember right you had to run through BBI up to the second time you meet that mustache guy, and you get ~20 throwblasts from a crate in his room, then buy some more from him and get a martyr's talisman, then rush to Gazer.
Is that about right?
