There is no one on the face of this earth who played MGS5 and wasn't disappointed to some degree, right? Even if you like it overall, it just has so many problems that are impossible to ignore

The world was boring, the gameplay was atrocious (even death march difficulty was a joke and not very fun) and the story was weak in the second half with very little focus on The Wild Hunt at all

Man I keep hearing good shit about the Witcher 3 but its always about the amazing world or meaningful story, then everyone just glosses over combat / gameplay.
This kind of concerns me because I tried to get into Witcher 2 and thought it controlled like utter dog shit. I'm interested in the world and all the hype but I cant play a game if I don't enjoy actually playing the thing.
It seems like people enjoy the card minigame more than playing the actual game part of the game.

I don't think anything made this year deserves GOTY even though we need to pick one anyway. Everything was fairly derivative and what we've all come to expect. There were some fun games for sure but not something pushing the boundaries and delivering the new and exciting.
When I played Half-Life in 1998 I was absolutely amazed at how different it was. When I played Witcher 3 this year it more of a "eh that was alright"

I think a lot of people do actually, more than you'd figure if you were being cynical.
But game reviewers value story over mechanics because they often have to play the game quickly, and dont have the time to master controls. Also story is much easier to write about than how a game mechanic feels.
It's so much easier to talk about a games character or story or whatever than the process of playing and exploring it. So thats what people read and how people judge a gams value.

The trees are broken. Some are underpowered as fuck while others introduce completely broken shit.
The lock-on system is clunky and suffers from the shitty camera which makes it more advantageous to just ignore it and spam buttons and hope Geralt hits who you want.
Mounted combat is indefensible. The horse in general was fucking shit.

It doesn't change and it's not very deep. You have a small list of talents to add as modifiers, access to all signs from the start and a bunch of potions and decoctions you can craft (bombs don't do enough damage to be useful)
Combat is basically the occasional dodge, a sign or two and some fast or strong attacks depending on the enemy. And just like Witcher 2 you can throw up a quen shield if you think you're going to die except in Witcher 3 quen is so good it actually heals you. As for the rest of the gameplay is basically riding between areas, holding down witcher senses to follow trails or climbing up something.

I told you what there is to do outside of the combat though. There's really not much. You travel the world on horseback / boat, hold down witcher senses if you're doing a side quests, create some potions, oils, decoctions and perhaps some Witcher gear towards the end game and that's about it
I don't get it, the combat in Witcher 3 was fine. It was hardly even remotely bad. It wasn't excellent, but it wasn't bad.
I'm almost convinced this has become to go-to argument against this game because there's almost nothing else they can fucking slam it for.

-Easy platforming
-Riding your horse or sailing a boat to the next quest

I've tried to start the game now 3 times(over a lengthy period of time) but I just can't get past the few 15 minutes. I feel bored and not pulled in the slightest. I've managed to get to the first town/castle/tower where he asks me to hunt a griffin but meh... I always close it down after 5 minutes.
I loved W1 and W2 though.

You walk into a slow level bandit camp and chop them up into pieces one by one and the last guy's "Conjurin'! bastard's conjurin'!" after you cast quen again for the 10th time in a minute and he just walks into your whirl meat grinder, instead of either dropping to his knees asking for mercy or just running away.

witcher 3 has the illusion of open world but it's actually pretty linear.
Yeah you can wander away from the main quest but you're going to get rekt, you need to do main story, then you can do a few side quests, then do some more main story, then when you've gained levels you can do some more side questing.
