The thing is that the 3DS will never win in the particular niche the vita is for. It's relatively small though so nintendo doesn't even try to win it over. It's still big enough to sustain the vita, so if you're part of this niche it's very likely that you prefer the vita over the 3DS, if you're not than you probably prefer the 3DS. The market is big enough for both systems.

It's pretty interesting actually. You're essentially a prisoner for your country thing (Panopticon) and you're fighting to reduce your sentence. You start with one million years, and you have to buy permission to even lay down or walk 5 steps and stuff like that.
the story unfolds really well, the pacing is a little off sometimes but it's super fucking interesting.

I did check the library though and I got a few games that I really like for both consoles but there hasn't been a single Vita upcoming release that interests me. With the 3DS there is atleast SMT IV:F and MH:X but that's pretty much it

Both have a decent upcoming library of games I'm looking forward too, there's still games already out that I'm just waiting to get as well for both.
With the 4th Anniversary in Feb. in the west, I expect I'll be spending a good amount of money again on the Vita then. 3DS games will be evenly paced as far as I can tell; FE:Fates, Dragon Quest VII & VIII, Bravely Second, Project X Zone 2...

There's a Whitelist patch you can apply to the PSTV that makes a lot of games playable on it, some still have issues, but play, and others might not still work at all. Look it up sometime if you're interested.
As for essentials, that all depends on the type of games you're interested in. To someone just getting one or interested in buying one, that likes or doesn't mind some weeb games, I'd suggest getting Ys: Memories of Celceta, Persona 4 Golden, and the Atelier games. If you're looking for western games, there's not really a whole lot, I hear Killzone is great for a portable FPS, Gravity Rush is fun, and if you're a fan of Uncharted, I hear the Vita game isn't too bad either.

On the Vita? I really can't speak for quality or enjoyment on many since I'm still getting games for it, but Moe Chronicle and Dungeon Travelers 2 seem to be praised as some of the best dungeon crawlers on it, there's a demo for the latter that is enjoyable, I'll have more to say about MC once my copy comes in.
On top of the Atelier games, there's always Neptunia if you don't have a PC that can run them (honestly, I suggest getting the PC versions as they're often on sale).
