>too much play time
your problem is not enough play time
Are you pushing down too hard on the pad when trying to do motions?

Bad form. You're sliding your thumb too much instead of just hopping it. Make sure you're not on the very edge of the dpad either.

I can make my thumb go all the way back like that easily.
Who else can here? People always look freaked out when I give them a thumbs up.

Hopping it?

Its a genetic thing, most likely around 50/50, guys who can't bend go nuts cause they can't go past 1 degree, while guys like us go 90.
Its not even that amazing, but hey, makes people smile and entertains for a while, so its a nice thing to have I suppose.

Instead of sliding your thumb, for example you're performing a special that requires back forward, hop from the back to the forward on your dpad. Your thumb won't be exposed to as much friction this way.
When I first started playing Binding of Isaac: Rebirth, I used to use my thumbstick to shoot, then I switched to face-buttons and it caused me a lot of pain. I got used to it after a few days. Previously I'd only played games like Bloodborne where you're not having to constantly mash or hold in buttons.
not to sound like a shill, but if you want you can try to pick up an arcade stick if you feel like a d-pad is too much for your thumbs. either that or just play with the analog stick.
I got a sore thumb only when I play charge characters
