It's pretty much agreed upon that DSII was better than DaS in every way except, glaringly, world design, the mocap/weightless weapons BS, and the plot/lore. The PvP is definitely better, but I still got more mileage out of DeS.

I just realized today why DkS2's "lore" is so garbage.
It completely lacks a background. Like, in Dark Souls 1, in the intro video you are presented the world and the events that happened before you get put in the world, and you hear about all these characters which you later meet in the game and learn more about them through item descriptions.
In DkS2 there's no such thing. Every item description is either a throw-back to some "totally not a DkS1 rip-off" character or "this item had an owner a long time ago... but who can say who it was?" type of shit. You have no idea what's going on and even after completing the game you're left in the dark.
