Just started playing dark souls for the first time
I've never played a souls game or a fromsoft title before, are there any tips, tricks or advice I should know?

Not really, just level up stats you want for your particular Build. Most people try Melee class, try and up your VIT, END and STR the most if you go for that.
Play cautiously and you'll have a safe time.
Reinforce a weapon you're comfortable with. More power =/= better for survivalUnless you have the Black Knight Greatsword. Jesus fuck how did my friend kill Orny and Smough first try with that thing
Don't kill NPCs until there is nothing left in the game to do.
Explore and experiment with the environment.
Don't put points into resistance. If you're going strength, don't put any into dex unless needed for a weapon. Opposite applies for dex.

Yeah, I only managed to get the Halberd and Greataxe.
Any time I wanted to get the Greatsword, it never came for me, but my Friend got it TWICE. The lucky bastard.
Be careful as to which stats you decide to increase.
You will not be able to reallocate your points unlike in Dark Souls 2. If you come across a hacker that reallocates your points all towards resistance, game over.

Take things slowly, take time to explore. Your armor's weight and your equip load stat determine how quickly you move, dodge, and your general i-frames. Armor defense isn't nearly as important as poise, or in fighting game terms, Super Armor. Low weight armor tends to have jack shit for poise, but can carry good resistances like resistance to poison or curse.
Weapon level and weapon scaling are far more important than your own personal level, and if you have the option to level yourself up or level up your weapon, level up the weapon first. Most weapons in the game can carry you through the game so once you find one you like, try to stick with it.
Don't kill NPCs unless they actively attack you first. If you accidentally attack one you don't want to kill and they become hostile, spend souls at the pardoner in the church to forgive your sins. Also if you have the souls, buy at least one Purging Stone from him. Curse is by far the worst status ailment in the game.

Capra demon is a pretty dumb fight and you'll get mad at the fact that (unlike other fighters) it either doesn't reset perfectly, or the dogs are random, or the things the AI is sensitive to are so subtle that basically the fight will change minutely each time in a stupid
Just cheese the fight by running up the stairs and jumping onto the tree, it's not even a real boss fight anyway and it's only "hard" because of the tiny room, the camera going apeshit on the overhanging garbage, and the randomness of the dogs' pathing

I couldn't find the right way to go after the tutorial. If you can' kill the first enemy you come across once you reach the main land, you're going the wrong direction.

Upgrading your weapons and then two-handing them makes the game literal easy mode. If you have the opportunity to two-hand, you should always go for it since it deals heavier damage.
Spend some time practicing your rolling and don't bother with the shield.
If you have that down and want to completely fuck open the game, practice parrying and playing without lock on.

There is no "right way" to go, all ways loop, as long as you DON'T have the Master Key you'll always end up doing everything there is to do (if you have the Master Key you can sequence break and end up sort of plowing on in one direction a long way)

Get a bow early on and buy a bunch of the cheap wooden arrows. When you run into the dragon on the bridge, get into a position where you can repeatedly shoot his tail. After enough shots the tail will come off and you'll get the Drake Sword, which is a very good longsword early on.

Progression is the order of completion and has nothing do with killing NPCs or whatever the fuck you were talking about. The master key allows you to skip certain things or do them in a different order, fucking with the regular order of progression, which a new player should experience, in my opinion.

I got a SL1 dickwraith with a chaos dagger +5. I use it for exactly what you think I do. Usually I try to make the invasion interesting.

You're missing out anon, Sorcerer build was super fun and a completely different level of difficult as a first playthrough.
Not able to use heavy shields, having to learn how to dodge, being able to sneak past enemies with magic, fall control.
Magic is fun.
Magic is somewhat unfun when all the enemies in an area have magic resistance though.
But that's why lightning/fire halberds exist.

Greatsword +15 doesn't require a shield (in fact you're gimping yourself if you use one) and you do need to learn how to dodge because there are situations where some enemies won't get one-shotted by your normal two handed attack. But it's rare.

Also learn how weapon scaling works, if you get a high dmg weapon that doesn't scale with your lvl you either have to stop lvling up or get a another one that actually uses your stats (str / dex)

It works because their melee attacks deal fuck all damage this close. They only hit you with the lower part of their weapon as opposed to the whole blade.
Stamina reg stuff + decent poise + weapon buff make them trivial.

Chunk them? If you're upgrading your pyro flame, which is a fuck load of souls to do, it can def help to carry you thru the fight. You're doing it low level tho, so it might just be a better idea to get an elemental weapon or use a buff, and again, power within helps but can also get you killed if you mess up.

All of the benefits it gives are extremely small and can be gained thru rings/armor/shields. Any physical/magical resistances can be met by having a bunch of soft humanity on you or simply upgrading your armor. It's basically a wasted level and should be ignored by all.

Run to the left orb thing outside of the range of the branches and destroy it. Run outside of the range of the falling floor and branches again to the right for the second orb thing. Then run back to the entrance, sprint towards the hole in the floor, jump, and hope you hit the platform beneath.

Yeah, Demons' Souls is better. Specifically, Dark Souls punishes you for playing with people online by not allowing you to save. It also doesn't let you play with whoever you want. Demons' Souls lets you play with whoever you want since it's all on one server. Also the levels felt as good as in DaS to me. There were some bad ones like the Dragon Aerie but also some really good stuff like the wraith-spawning trap room you have to drop into in the crypt.

There was this weird thing with dodging where your hitbox wasn't in synch with your character model. It's where the "shockwaves" thing came from.
It's not even a bug, they never patched it out. It's an intentional design that basically means your hitboxes are lying to you.
Also, tying i-frames to a stat was just weird.

It's an alright game that's mostly seen as bad because it makes so many mistakes the other games in the series avoided. It's worth playing because it's still an alright game, and also as a case study as to what the other games do so right. Finding the flaws is enjoyable in its own right.

Some, particularly the earlier ones, were pretty good. Forest of Fallen Giants was a nice interconnected mess with lots of unlockable paths going to and from the one bonfire. The Bastille was also interesting, going so far as to allow for two different ways to enter it and progress through it.
Besides those two, though, the levels were generally entirely linear, and didn't even bother hiding it. The linear levels in Dark Souls and Bloodborne at least attempt to make themselves look natural, but in DaS2 you get entirely obvious piles of rubble and straight hallways.

I usually just run to the hydra, the golems end up getting killed by the hydra's attacks.
The fight itself can be pretty fucking annoying when he has very few heads left though. He'll usually just miss and you'll have to run to his head in time. Make sure you go to the toilet before you start, I was fighting him during a SL1 playthrough once and had to piss real bad about 10 minutes in, and the fucker just wouldn't attack close enough for me to hit his head in time.
