Eh. I got kind of bored before I got to the evil lord or whoever that guy was. Maybe I was playing it wrong, but combat seemd like a chore. I'm waiting for the second expansion pack, and I'll give it another shot I guess.
>>
>>320979835
Pic, link, and end of post unrelated, OP?
or do you think pillars is actually a good game?
>>
>>320980417
it is though
>>
Pillars isn't that great. Worth playing for sure but it's no Baldur's Gate.

Overly pretentious writing to the point where its a snore-fest, no romance, bland generic characters who you don't even care to get to know, very weak plot in general.

The combat is good though.
>>
>>320980528

Yeah the thing i hated the most is that u get no xp from fighting and its pointless. I get that they made it so you can RPG and be a non violent character but still. Well, the intention was good, but this game is really all about the combat and doesn't really try to pretend it isn't. Otherwise maps would not all be chock full of enemies. So there is pretty much no point in not rewarding the player.

-Barely explains half its mechanics or how anything works expecting you to figure out complex systems that are next to impossible to learn without at least some hints
-If you make a mistake early on, you have to start a new game or hope you have an early save
-Enemy scaling is super fucking steep so you better either read a guide or know the game inside and out within the first few minutes of playing

Oh champions of norath is on sale? Oh I thought you said the best RPG was on sale, not some over rated POS.
>>
>>320982006

I bought it recently, was turned off pretty quick by the metric ton of lore dump.

"Hello Main Character, go look for this, but watch out for these guys and also these guys, and keep in mind this thing, this thing, and also this thing, while you watch out for the thing that might happen, let me introduce you to this girl also who will go with you and tell you about herself immediately, oh and by the way if you see any of these things on your way out to look for this thing, grab it will ya? And hurry up, it's half past fantasy night time on the eve of fantasy wednesday."

... When he just as easily could've said something like.

"Yo, you're sick? You need some X berries, should be some nearby, and be quick about it. Keep an eye out for *insert name for bandit type dudes here* while you're out."

It's the RPG equivalent of going in dry the second I open the door and let you in my house. Like, fuck, can we maybe spoon a bit before we go balls deep with explaining the world to the player?
>>
>>320983135
if you liked the base game, you will like the DLC
>>
>>320985041

Even Planescape Torment, a game that's almost nothing but talking about the story, the setting, and the characters, doesn't dump as hard on you as Pillars does.

Morte intrudes himself, tells you where you are, gives you an idea of how to get out, and bam you're looking around, trying to find a way out, absorbing what you've been told and what you can observe.

Same with Balders Gate 2, you're trapped, you wanna be untrapped, there are other people there who are part of your old party who also want out, they'll explain who they are and why you're probably trapped there and that's about it until later.

But Pillars, you're off to fetch some fucking berries to cure a flu, but before that the fucking caravan master pulls out his Tome of +1 Exposition, casts Divine Words of the Glossary, and after what can be a 10+ minute conversation, THEN you can go out and get the berries that stop you from dying of dysentery, and the berries are 10 FEET AWAY GUARDED BY A WOLF. In the time it took to tell the player a whole bunch of shit, you could get those berries, make the tea you were gonna make, let it cool, drink it, and go back to sleep.

>them goldplated NPCs everywhere

When I noticed that these were Kickstarter-Backer-Stories, my immersion was killed immediately. But the stories themselves were literally "psssht nothing personell"-tier of cringeworthy.

Why did they do that? Literally, why? Can someone explain that to me? What relation do I have with Kickstarter Backers? None. Fucking none.

Fuck off with that shit. It was a stupid idea and ruined the game for me personally.
>>
>>320985972
If you didn't like the game just say so, but don't make shit up. Most that conversation is optional, you don't have to exhaust every single line of dialogue with that guy.

If you are not interested in what an NPC has to say just hit "K bye".
>>
>>320986135

I love that this change exists.
Perpetually butthurt transfags whine about something which doesn't even make fun of them, and now the joke is about how perpetually butthurt they are instead.
>>
>>320985972
I don't remember it being that bad, or even that long. It's been a while I guess, but for example I clearly remember being bored to tears during the conversation with the blue dude with the book and the floating ghost bitch in Torment. The only thing that kept me from dropping the game was that I really enjoyed all that shit with the zombies walking around.
>>
>>320986457

Then you get nothing, and who knows if what he explains at that point will be explained later.

I don't care if you think it's a legit complaint or not, it's why I was turned off from the game, and I think most WRPGs do shit like this far better.

not that guy but I played it until around the time you have to search for some nobleman's missing niece that he was also fucking or some shit. The story was just barely good enough to maintain interest in but the battles were repetitive as fuck. And I mean, in the sense that every group of enemies, whether it was lions or zombies or bandits or ogres, required the exact same approach. The only different enemies were the teleporting ghosts. On top of that they tries some retarded shit with the stats where apparently there was not supposed to be an "optimal build" for any class. Pretty sure there WAS an optimal build after all but in the end all they achieved was making the stats all watered down so that character level is by far the most important stat in the game and everything else is secondary at best. Best I can give the game is 5/10, kinda sorta interesting world but boring as shit combat. Also I didn't experiment much with the wizard class but spells seemed lame as fuck.

Overall I have more fun playing user-made Neverwinter Nights modules.
>>
>>320988147

I'm not never gonna play the game, but now that I know it's so exposition heavy I'm gonna wait until I'm specifically wanting a game like it.
>>
>>320990701
They don't expand on these things. There's literally only one bigger city and that's it.

You don't get to always use the mechanics the game introduces to you. They are way to uncommon. It's easier to just hack everything away instead of using the landscape.
>>
>>320990701

>>
>>320980643
So what's wrong with it?
>>
>>320989776
> I genuinely doubt it causes so much trouble for the majority to justify that crap reputation the level usually gets

Because everyone replayed it to death, just like Irenicus' dungeon in BG2. Why people noways might not like is because they don't get it. There are no clearly indicated routes to take, game just gives an entire level for you to dick around in and find your way through. Too much freedom can be just as confusing as no freedom at all if you're coming from a generation of games holding your hand throughout the entire experience.
>>

>Writing and story

So? Outside of the combat there is actually a lot of world interactivity and freedom. In PoE your entire party has to be together if you just want to go upstairs or some shit. In DivOS as long as you're on the same map, you can go in and out of buildings,up stairs, and split your party into whatever little groups you want and go separate ways and shit.

In DivOS your strength and telekinesis skills can actually be used to move items around and shit.In PoE skill checks only matter outside of battle when you're given one of like 4 storybook CYOA moments.

It just does everything better as a game.Who cares about story when PoE can't even get the game part right?
>>
>>320990990
>On top of that they tried some retarded shit with the stats where apparently there was not supposed to be an "optimal build" for any class.

that was not the objective. Devs always knew there would be optimal builds for minmaxers; the objective was not to punish players too much for picking "wrong" stats, so that in everything but the hardest difficulty, it would be viable to play as a smart fighter, or a dumb, ranged paladin. 4649

My major problems are that despite how good the combat is, it falls flat on its face for two reasons. The first is the fucking awful and always annoying pathing, which for a large percentage of fights you can exploit to bottleneck the amount of enemies you have to deal with at one time. Secondly, if you don't bottleneck fights and due to the absence of an aggro system, some NPCs will just fucking gun it for your supports and run the entire fight and make you boot up your last save.

Everything else though, besides the walls of text (some of which are actually interesting), is pretty great and this game has kept me entertained the whole time. Bonus points to Obsidian to creating party members who are actually interesting and likable (Kana talks a little too much).

>despite how good the combat is,
How?

You figure out what works for your party and then you repeat the same tactic over and over in every single battle because the game has nonexistent encounter design, every fight starts and ends the same way. Fighting trash mobs in this game (70% of your playtime) is insanely repetitive and there was no point to having so much of it when you don't even get XP from combat

I liked the game, pretty solid combat in path of the damned. Micro to hell and back but I personally enjoy it.

Although I admit is expected a better world and story from them, its like they were too afraid with this game.

Nevertheless Iam fucking glad these games are making a return, I want more Underrail, more Divos more Age od Decadence, just fucking more.
Would love for the future of SOME of these crpgs to be a mix of Dragons Dogma gameplay and a tight story and companions.
Especially since Bannerlord is never coming out fuck.

So its been 2-3 years since I keep up with vidya news and vidya in general. Can any one recommend me some bomb ass rpgs to get?

I hear a lot about pillars of eternity and the other one where you play as two people. Any other good ones come out?

nah I'm fucking glad turn-based CRPGs still exist. and by that I mean DIV:OS and Underrail which get combat right, not the RTWP shit in POE

I fucking hope the story is better instead of trying to be light hearted funny, because that art style is atrocious.

I really do.
>>
I don't think the plot is that great considering how much of it there is.

If there was less talking or I was more interested in shit, I'd be fine with the game, but as is it's just an avalanche of "I don't give a fuck".
>>
>>320992790

Eder's banter is great, and occasionally helps with the massive amount of context that is either missing or not fully understood (because of excessive amount of reading required). The whole story behind Aloth's past and current situation really help to flesh him out. As for the others, I haven't seen Durance's or Pallegina's stories unfold yet, but Pallegina is opinionated which adds character depth, rather than people who don't have anything to say about the world they live in. But yeah, Grieving Mother is by far the best companion of them all.

As someone who loved BG2 and is enjoying PoE despite its flaws.. what do you recommend? Is AoD really that good? Wasteland 2 looked interesting but I haven't played the first, same with Shadowrun. I don't know much about undderrail.

BG2 is the only crpg ive played.

Divinity Original Sin
Age of Decadence
Underrail
Shadowrun Dragonfall

I heard Serpent in the Staglands is breddy gud too

Durance was betrayed by his God and it makes for some interesting characterization.

>>
>>320993589
The setting has settings like sea monster filled pirate isles and Rennaissance Italy-inspired culture that would have been cool to explore
But instead they set the game in the most generic part of the setting possible (basically a Sword Coast-ripoff) presumably to not scare away BGfags. Even the expansion is set in a frozen tundra with nothing of interest.
>>
>>320993762
It's basic. It's been done to death. It's cliche as all get out. There is literally nothing new or interesting brought to the table to set it apart in some way. It's trying to be as adequate and decent as possible, taking no risks. Everything you can do in it can be done in better ways in various other games.
>>
>>320993762
>do you retards even have an actual definition for it when you use it?
Elves and dwarves and ancient evil awakens oh my.
>>
>>320993497

You should try

Underrail fucking now, and then all the others
Arcanum for the setting
Torment for the story and setting
Icewind Dale for classic combat.
Age of Decadence for the combat as well

I personally think Shadowrun games were okayish, you dont really lose anything by dont trying them.

>>320993380

I respect you opinion but for some reason I think they are on to something in Pillars RTWP, it created for me some intense fights.

I'm really glad I stopped having a boner for wizards a few years back, or I would have been really really let down like you were.

Don't get me wrong, there is nothing wrong with wizards and I still think they're radical as shit.

But for some reason, completely out of no where, my new favourite class hands down is Monk

Shooting magic at everything is cool and all, but I just can't get enough of beating the shit out of things with my bare hands.
Monk is such a cool class, holy shit. The only problem is that its a terribly underrepresented type of character, and I hardly ever get to make a proper unarmed character.
>>
>>320993589

You being a Watcher, someone who is capable of reading into the souls and pasts of others, is pretty original I think. Ciphers, a class which focuses on exploiting mental weakness. There are Chanters too but I don't think they're worth discussing because of how lack-luster they are. Other than that, everything is pretty standard for a high-fantasy theme.

The tutorial was pretty straightforward, but the first level was way too open.
I don't mind multiple routes in level design, but a giant arena with no doors and some walls scattered about? That's not something a beginner knows how to deal with, and is just bad level design in general.
It doesn't help that you have no augs to play with the whole time, so it's a boring slog whenever you want to play through again.

The level design redeems itself with Battery Park and NY Streets and becomes awesome with Hong Kong and Paris.

Tall Stocky Human
Token Non Human

Who is good at

Hitting things with a Sword
Casting some Variation of Magic Missles, and Hitting Things with a Staff
Healing, and Hitting Things with a Mace

Fight some Bandits until the Ancient Evil Awakens and then go fight the Ancient Evil

Along the way, visit places such as

Dungeon
Cave
Forrest
Rural Human Town
Mountain Pass/Trail
Elf Dungeon
Large Human City
Elf City
Lava Dungeon
Purple Dungeon
Magic Forrest

Do all these things with a party consisting of 2 to 4 people with tragic pasts that only you can resolve, and maybe a dog.

If this is 90% or more of an accurate description of your WRPG, it is generic.
>>
>>320994435

Good job the devs aren't the one that control market direction but publishers, and this was a crowdfunded game so there is no publisher.

Most likely conclusion suits will come to is that crowdfunding doesn't work and developers need a publisher to stop them screwing around and hit production targets. This is 100% correct too.

Pillars of Eternity had a lot of systems which could've been neat but were too shallow in implementation.

Hell, I think the Tutorial area alone is a good enough example of them

>select your Background stuff, which never really plays out again outside of the first convo in the tutorial and half the skills were just useless--Survivalism--or only useful for a few points in, like that Fitness skill

>CYOA pages, which there are only a handful of and don't really do anything besides make you stop and go 'hey that was neat'

>you disarm a trapped area not by figuring out a solution to a puzzle but rather by lighting a few pillars with a torch (or with your BURNING HEAD in the case of the fire-head race) as if the developers couldn't be bothered to make something that would engage your brain
