Gauntlet is mostly only fun in local co-op. Don't bother with SHK, it starts a little bit interesting but in no time it's just absolute mediocre at max. + extremely dull and basically a chore to play.

Gameplay is better than D2 by virtue of better controls. That's about it. Of course that's not really getting into stat systems, resource management and other stuff like that. I think ultimately that comes down to which you prefer.
