It's just that the higher resolution has made the shadow maps a higher resolution as well, so the shading is a bit more fine.

A lot of up-res jobs do this unintentionally, and sometimes it ruins the original aesthetic because the game was designed around those particular shadings.

I'm not saying it was a great game but anyone who played it at release had to be impressed with the scale of the levels and overall the graphic quality was great. That was when of the first games I remember actually looking 'next-gen'
