What ever happened to demos?

It seems like nowadays Japs are the only ones confident enough to release them.
>>
>>320931026
It's to make people buy their games to actually try them.

People usually just pirate and then try it out from there, but buyfags are fucked.
>>
Demos are not needed nowadays cause you can just look up a lets play or whatever

Back in the day it was much harder to actually get a taste of the game
>>
... not sure if your serious
I hope your not serious
>>
Devs don't want you to know that their game is shit before you buy.
>>
>>320931026
They still exist, just not in physical form. A RotTR demo recently appeared on XbL.
>>
>>320931026
Because it makes too much sense, video game companies now like to fuck their customers as hard as possible because there is 0 backlash. I remember getting a 360 and playing the Splinter Cell Double Agent online demo with the terrorists vs mercs game play and I quite literally went out and bought it the same day. What's the point in doing something positive when you can just force shit out of the door and atleast some of your customers will lap it up.
>>
I know on the newer consoles.(PS3,PS4, Xbox360,Xbone) they usually have a section specifically for demos in the market place.
>>
early access retard
>>
>>320931220
This.
>>
>>320931026
Then AAA companies can't get to jew you out
>>
>>320931220

I'm really thinking this is the case.
>>
>>320931026

Cost wise it isn't viable anymore. Especially around the time that Bluray disks first became a thing. Online stores took over somewhat but dropped off soon afterward.

Then there are other factors like maintaining hype before release. Got to prevent people from finding problems in a game before they pay for it.
>>
>>320931026
I have a demo disk for the gamecube that came with Double Dash, it had teenage mutant ninja turtles, Star wars and some others i cant remember.
>>
>>320931327

Demos went away long before early access you underage fuck.
>>
Japan is the only ones who still have enough confidence in their games to make demos.
>>
>>320931026

When was the last time you owned a console? PSN and m$ store are clustered with demos.
>>
>>320931690

too bad they still charge for them

There are demos on Steam too you dumb shit.
>>
>>320931820
>Only games I see demos I see are for literally who games

Big name games don't need demos, stop being a retarded bitch.
>>
>>320931835

well two demos for jap games I cared about came out this year

FFXV I had to buy Type-0 if I wanted to play it.
Yakuza Zero needed PS+ which is not free, and I'm sure that will be the case with the "free" XV demo too.
>>
Beta tests are literally just demos that also stress test the dev servers.
>>
>>320931798
Yeah, nowadays all we get is 2 hours alone with the full game to decide if we want to keep it or get a no-questions-asked refund.
>>
>>320931894

This mentality is why video games are in such a pathetic state now.
>>
>>320931026
you can't hide creative bankruptcy with demos
but it's easy and cheaper with trailers

they call them public betas and they are still pretty common

As far as Yakuza goes the demo IS free on the dev side, but the distribution service doesn't want to let it go for free.

Square has always been weird about how they distribute their demos, for instance the FFVIII demo that came with early copies of Brave Fencer Musashi.
>>
>>320931184
No, people don't "usually" pirate games to try them.

They pirate games to get them for free. a very small percentage actually buy the game after they pirate it.

I don't know what you're talking about anon.
>>
>>320932236
Ever think it may be because they don't feel the game was worth cost after trying it?
>>
>>320931220
Exactly. Do you think it's a coincidence that so many games in the past few years were a complete mess at launch?
>>
>>320932334
Take off the training wheels anon, how many of those games were released in the last year and dont have an "indie" tag?

I remember reading some years ago that releasing a demo makes the game actually sell less
>>

OP asked for demos in general, not for AAA demos or demos that came out in the last year.
You still make a valid point that counteracts mine.

Asia/Hong Kong stores have way more demos. Demos have hard facts in the west that they actually cause game sales to decrease. They bundle them with other games to get people to buy games they otherwise wouldn't give a shit about.
>>

It's more convenient to just release a demo as a full game and keep building the final product and sell the missing pieces as DLC.

Why bother making demos when people can just pirate the full game these days.
>>
>>320931220

/thread

Demos are more effort than they are worth. Not only do you need to section off, and make a working short version of your game, but if it's designed badly, or awkwardly, it could turn people away even if the actual game is good.
>>
>>320935269
Eh.... honestly it must have been a exciting time back then but net yaroze was pretty meh overall.
>>
>>320932570
Where did you take this pic from?

Demo discs were shit until the PS2, there were a few good PS1 like the one with MGS, but rare
>>
>>320936101
Why risk demos and people not buying your shit, when you can just make people buy it without letting them try it.
>>
>>320931026
The possibility of losing sales all because consumers are able to try something out for free before purchase is scary to publishers and devs. So eliminate the risk to further maximize potential profits.
>>
>>320931220
It's this + All the indie devs barely make a good long enough to make a demo of it. You'd get like one 2 minute level.

Demos should be encouraged. They were a wise consumer tool.

>be a kid
>buy official playstation magazine for the demo disc
>funky music, all those game demos

Shit was the best. Also I was a dumb kid so I'd play demos over and over just to see if I could "get into" the full game. Those were the days.
>>
>>320931026
a game had to be competently done and relatively bug free for it to be put onto discs and sold, nowadays you can release unfinished buggy games and later patch them.demos would stop this
>>
>>320931204
let's plays still aren't good enough. You don't get to actually feel how the game plays.
>>
>>320931026
Nowadays they are called early access and cost $60
>>
>>320931220
This plus the industry's attempt to abolish refunds.
>>
How do you make a demo out of a multiplayer shooter and/or open world sandbox game?
>>
>>320931026
Supposedly releasing a demo actually reduces sales. I guess people play it to sate their curiosity and then decide they've had enough.
>>
>>320944017
Just limit the play area and content. For multiplayer, allow players access to the same servers as regular players but only if they running one of maybe 3 or so maps and limit the degree to which the player can progress, which weapons they can use, etc.

For sandbox games, again just only allow the player access to one city/island/etc., the first few missions, only a few side activities and so on.
