There's a bunch of "colleges" and "universities" that have game related courses. Non of them really provide graduate training or opportunities.

Therefore no graduates to go into the industry.

There's also the fact that nearly any game related company in Australia seems to go belly up and/or fails to turn a profit.

So, not very viable in a market sense.

It's a shame, but fuck it. I'm spending my time getting a good degree so I have disposable income actually to buy games (rather than be poor and make them).

There used to be quite a few Australian studios but almost all of them have been shut down now.

I heard most of them were born out of government tax breaks and subsidies that no longer exist and having an expensive game studio at the ass end of the world just doesn't make much sense anymore.

We have politicians who heavily censor games to protect the precious children

We have very loud mouthed and disappointingly effective feminist/whatever groups that censor games to protect all the precious women

Everything here is very expensive, why pay someone AUD$75000 when you can pay an American $35000?

I've got a mate who works at halfbrick and he says everyone in the industry is incompetent.

Also as someone who had to share a few electrical engineering courses with 'Bachelors in Game Development' plebes, LITERALLY EVERY SINGLE GRADUATE for 2012/2013 was an 'ideas guy' with a skill level somewhere between godawful and offensively bad.

Nah. I'm 2nd generation Aussie and I hang out with loads of migrants due to my excessive shisha habit and they fucking hate the idea of more migrants. Artificially increasing diversity through encouraged immigration, quotas etc is such a strange concept to them. Demographics are what they are, it's only the West (mainly anglosphere) that feels the need to push this shit so hard.

Reminds me of my time at university.

I was dumb enough to do a "game development" course many years ago but was at least lucky enough to come out with a regular degree in software engineering and another in multimedia or something so no one knows my shame when applying for real jobs.

Almost everyone in this course was fucking hopeless. The maths and physics teachers were amazed at the lack of basic knowledge they found in the students. I remember one of my programming lecturers once expressing his dismay to me at how incompetent all but a few students were. Another lecturer told us that he had been warned by the faculty about the students in this course being a bunch of useless brats and he's never experienced something like that in decades of teaching all over the country. It was downright embarrassing being in this course.

Final year project were done alongside some students from some other course who will building robots or something. They put us all to shame, they were better programmers and they built robots too.

I see billboard ads at the various train stations for various gaming related courses/degrees. I am still unsure what they actually teach or qualify you for. Unfortunately all this was not available back when I finished my HSC as I might have actually considered going to Uni then.

A lot of what is offered seems to be graphical though. I haven't really seen proper gaming programming orientated stuff. And like other anons said there was a big government push to make an industry here, but that has dried up.

I doubt we would ever have a proper big dev down here that could do AAA stuff. It would just be too expensive. Though I could see some decent semi-indie studios being viable if the right people could get together. There would need to be a clean up of the various courses and degrees made available though so people don't end up doing the gender studies equivalent of gaming.

There's an industry here, it's just small, lots of indies, TONS of freelancers, lots of multi-disciplinary devs who do tv/movies as well as games, lots of short term studios/contracts that'll pop up for a year to churn out stuff then dissolve until the next project.

Do qualifications and certs really mean anything in the vidya industry? I thought your portfolio of recent work/mods was what people looked at.

It's similar with film. A degree is a piece of paper showing you have done courses on your subject and understand certain intricacies of what you do. Your portfolio is proof that you can do what that piece of paper says you can do. You could totally just have the portfolio and be done with it, but in many cases you wouldn't get the chance to show it or you might not understand certain fine things that affect how what you do is received or interpreted. In the end, if you're shit then you're shit, and if you're good you're good. A degree is just a certification from someone stating that you are not shit.

>>320932594

>aushit wakes up

>>320930273
I'll tell you.
For most of the last decade, Australian governments have had no interest in promoting tech and innovation due to the fact that the majority of our politicians are elected by trades unions, or country folk/farmers/miners who don't give a fuck about emerging industries and have very little interest in seeing them become successful.
In a politicians mind, exporting is the only thing we need to do, Australia needs never be anything other than a fucking farm with a coal mine in the backyard.

>>
>>320931998
Pretty much both, students are not expected to be more intelligent than high school dropouts and the course is dumbed down as much as they can justify.
It effectively makes it a university priced Diploma of Software Engineering.
>>
>>320932803
hey whats that you got to do out there? oh thats right... fuck all
>>
>>320932247
I imagine it would depend on the company that is hiring. And whether you can sell yourself in the interview. At least that is what I have found with the non-gaming market. A lot of businesses seem to list certifications as a bonus, but experience is either a must or highly preferable.

I was more thinking that they would need to clean it up so that if there are actual gaming certs they would need to be condensed down into a handful of clear concise names and outcomes. All the shit I see is all different depending on where it is being offered. The word design seems to be thrown around too much as well. I swear some are just bullshit project management style courses for ideas men. Which isn't necessarily wrong, but needs to be communicated as such so that it is clear you aren't necessarily technically proficient because of that cert.

>>320932176
>2. No support from government

The government rarely knows what it wants to do over here. Especially when it comes to technology. It wasn't that long ago they were seriously pushing to censor the internet for stupid and dubious reasons. Literally reduced to tears at one point when it was pointed out how stupid they were. And hypocritical.

Really the best support they could give the industry would be tax breaks and to leave it alone. And even then who knows because of how leadership and the parties rubberband over here.
