I'm in a part of my life where I really, really need some nostalgia and most of the stuff from my childhood was either unpleasant or obscure shit like raggedy ann. I also really need something japanese to cleanse my palette of western games and japanese games that want to be western. I also need to play something that looks fun and innocent that wont try to be edgy, provocative, or shocking. I have literally never owned a digimon game and havent seen the digimon show since what in english was called season 4 (the one where humans digivolve, stopped caring there). But I see plenty of familiar digimon here after looking this up, and I have the money so why not?

I've played this back when it came out in Japan.
The game is great, as both an engaging rpg witb a fun story and as a digimon game. A lot of the side quests are fun and the cast is pretty great; having the royal knights as a crutch is a good idea as you get to interact with a fair amount of them and see a lot of fun scenes. It feels almost like a digimon anime game at points given your small group of friends with partners, which are constantly evolving so it's cool to see them grow alongside you. The game also gives a lot of heavy SMT vibes, even more so as it reaches its climax. Has some challenging fights for post game so there's stuff for everyone.

Throughout the series, we've seen two different Terriermon, multiple different Agumon, two different Lopmon, two different Patamon, two different Veemon, and two different Biyomon who've all digivolved into different forms. What's 'stupid' is expecting Digital creatures that are 1's and 0's to follow organic paths of evolution. This has been the theme since the very beginning, where the original tamagotchi's changed depending on HOW you raised your Digimon. If you raised an Agumon poorly, you'd get a Numemon. If you raised it well? You'd get a Greymon. This is also shown throughout the the series with 'negative' evolved forms, like Skullgreymon, Ruingreymon, and Megidramon.
The differences between Wild Digimon, the protagonists from the series, and the Digimon you tame in the games, is that the protagonists were really good at their job, while also typically having some kind of mcguffin that 'forces' a Digimon to evolve the 'right' way, like the crests.

Well, they're like Pokemon in that they're both RPG's based around raising monsters. Currently, Digimon is split between two different gameplay types. WORLD games, and STORY games.
WORLD style games, that are heavily influenced by the original tamagotchi's. You spend your time raising your Digimon through trials and minigames increasing their stats (like intelligence, speed, or strength) while taking care of them. How you raise your Digimon will dictate what it evolves into, and how well it does in battle. In battle the Digimon fights independently from your control, but you can issue it commands, or buff it with items while it fights. The games that follow this format are Digimon World 1, Digimon World Re:Digitize(Which you'll need the english patch to play), and the upcoming Digimon World: Next Order
STORY style games are more like traditional RPG's. You're given a squad of Digimon that battle in a sort of SMT-style turn based battle system, while the game leads you through a linear story. There's not much to talk about, but they're decently enjoyable games if you're a fan of the franchise. The games that fall under this category are Digimon World DS, Digimon World Dawn and Dusk, Digimon World Championship, and Digimon Cyber Sleuth.I'd personally just wait for Cyber Sleuth, because the other Story games really aren't that good.
If you're interested in playing one of the World style games, I'd recommend reading a guide to understand some of the basics. The games can be a bit confusing to a newcomer with how they just drop you in without much instruction as to where to go, what to do, and how to do it.
