Default for any game with the exception of TES in which case brightness all of the way up. Using Night Eye or light spells annoy me and if it helps to defend myself I play as a Khajiit most of the time anyway. It is just too easy to miss loot in a dark room.
Not exactly related, but I liked Mario Sunshine's use of brightness. The plot of the game is that the sunshines have been stolen, so the island is extremely dark. As you collect them, the game becomes brighter and brighter. At a certain point you can even get sunglasses which will reduce the brightness of the game.

Often the default is fine but sometimes I'll turn it a few notches up or down. Weirdest thing to do with this I've done was when I played Metro LL on 360 when it wasn't working on my computer is had to turn the brightness all the way up and it was still too dark. The last gen version of LL was a mess all around.

If we're feeling cynical, science is groping in the dark, finding something furry, asserting that it's a cat because that's what you're looking for, then using that as the basis for any further inquiry into the furry thing. Should you, e.g., discover that the furry thing does not have retractable claws, you call that a "confound" and develop some covering theories.
